After his set was over, there was a music-less lull as Messiah experienced
"Technical Difficulties" before starting up, and as there were no DJ's around
(apparently), some bozo tried to keep people from losing their energy rush by
turning on some "between set" music. Wait ... this isn't Techno ... uh oh, I
think I recognize it ... oh, NO. NO, NO, NO!! It's fucking Trent Reznor and
"Head Like A Hole", of all the fucking crap to play at a Rave, they play this!
(You will never realize how absolutely pathetic and revolting this song is
until you've heard 45 minutes of Aphex Twin right before it.)
I witnessed this only two days after Front Line Assembly. Compared to what
this kid does, FLA are yesterday's dirty bathwater. This guy's way on beyond
FLA, he's on beyond Skinny Puppy (yes, I'm not afraid to say that), he's on
beyond fucking everything. Some wags might accuse me of being chemically
biased (let's just say that I discovered the true wonderful meaning behind the
naming of "XL Recordings" - it has something to do with putting two letters
together), but as George (Stereotaxic) Sarah (who was only influenced by a
few beers) said, "This guy makes us look fucking pathetic". Jennifer's still
mumbling incoherently 2 days later ...
As for Messiah? The music's OK ("There Is No Law", "20,000 Hardcore Members",
"Temple of Dreams", and "Destroyer" were all paraded out) but they're a little
corny (I hate it when people try to "entertain" us) and, quite frankly, they
didn't have a prayer in hell having to follow that kid.
Final post-Rave reflection: it's ridiculous to talk about "Rave culture", when
the best Rave experience (for me) that can happen is to be sufficiently
"influenced" to the point where people and interaction cease to matter/exist,
and the only thing left is a complete overdose of sonic and visual stimuli.
(The multi-watt argon and krypton lasers really helped here.)
"The rebirth of the [L.A.] scene"? It was the rebirth of my existance.
The Aphex Twin - ignore him at your own risk.
(Describing 'The Aphex Twin' performance). Did he play already released
stuff or new (unreleased stuff) as well? Perhaps someone who wasn't as
alterred should answer this. Either way I hope someone will be smart enough
to put out a 'live' recording as has been done for a few other techno bands.
I hope this means he might be going on a tour of the US. If not, now much
did you LALAers pay this guy to travel almost half way around the world
for ONE performance!!? Nah, he must be touring...I hope.

I agree with this whole-heartedly although I fear it is a result of
anti-social tendencies and self-absorption (smiley). Instead of all this
dancing stuff, I think they should have raves in planetariums (LASER TECHNO!!)
...everyone relaxed and dosed in those reclined chairs
and then the huge hemispheric screen and a
powerful sound system to zoom you around the universe. Unfortunately,
there would surely be a NUMBER of freakouts...

I hope you were still under the influence when you wrote that. Going to
raves has now redefined your life and given you a rebirth!!?? Would you
give up all that you've done so far to 'RAVE' 24 hours a day? Do you
feel ADDICTED to techno/the beat/the lights/the X/L...? Or are these
parties simply a VERY enjoyable period of your life? To me, everything
associated with a 'rave' is escapism pure and simple. I do not mean this
derogatorily as I believe that a number of things
(personal insights, empathy development, development of ability to
express one's feelings/thoughts) may happen to you
during these episodes that can favourably affect your 'real' life -- the
shore that you find yourself washed up on when everything has worn off.
I am very, very happy that there is now an organized way to go completely
out of my head ... for a relatively short, self-contained period of time.

Worms, open a can today.
Not unusual to bring DJ's, etc., out from London or such for one night. But
it is expensive. Such is LA.

Yeah, but I can do this at home (especially helped by some XL with some R & S.)
I go to raves to interact with people, to meet new ones, to dance myself to new
physical heights, and pretend that maybe civilization _does_ have a hope for
the future....

I dunno... I there's no way I could sit still, either listening to music or
dosed or both. The lasers would be fascinating, but there's a certain
plateau of emotion that exists when you dance for hours on end...

Yes. If I could afford it and others were there too, yes.
> Do you feel ADDICTED to techno/the beat/the lights/the X/L...?
Some people get ADDICTED to yogurt. What's your point? I don't see it as a
drug itself, I see it as - corny here - "soul food".

Well, yeah, in the sense that people go to raves to shed all their mental
baggage, such as work stress and school and such, but many people take
something away from the "rave" experience with them when they leave.

I suspect that Greg has been reading the NME too long....That kind
of hyperbole is just part of falling in love with the wild and wacky world
of popular music folks....

Chances are, they won't be able to give it to you. I went and visited my
local planetarium and was disappointed to find out that their laser show is
all prepackaged and designed in New York. The "laser operator" doesn't do
much more than flip a switch and insert a VHS cassette. Morons.

I was at the science museum in Jacksonville last fall, getting a private
"after-hours" tour of the facilities with a friend from her old pal who
worked there, and I got him to spin up "Little Fluffy Clouds" on the multi-
kilowatt ultrabass sound system in the planetarium with the Zeiss star-
projector projecting and the film loops looping and man let me tell you --
it fucked up my brain. I'd kill or die to program a planetarium show
around a bunch of Orb tracks. It's like a Holy Grail thing now.

Lazlo (la...@triton.unm.edu)
At a recent outdoor rave here on July 4th, "Let Freedom Rave", a laser
company (the same one whose number I gave you, Pete) pulled their van up
and from a window projected a 7 watt laser show across the main dance
floor against a hillside. There was a ton of what seemed like non-sequiter
animation sequences and cool geometricities and such, and when I went to
talk to them and say good work, it turns out they were playing a pre-taped
show set to Pink Floyd's The Wall!!! The only input they had was switching
from red to green on beat every now and then... it was till marvellous, though,
and I don't think it would make much difference to me (unless they used the
same sequence at two different raves).
Brian
p.s. - a planetarium would work, but how could you convince them to take out
the seats? And how can you dance staring straight up??? :)

I have heard the the Miami Planetarium has their own guy who designs shows:
Vasko Yanchev (or something) --the mad Bulgarian... Every month or two
they come out with new shows but their music was along the lines of Zepplin/
Floyd/Rush etc... This seems well in keeping with the classic rock trend
among high school students these days... Too bad.

Is this something that's actually listenable in a non-enhanced non-rave
state? What singles/releases are available? Even a partial discography
would be appreciated.

Varies a bit. Some of it is very listenable under normal circumstances, other
stuff is rather hard, but nevertheless interesting. As far as I know:
Digideroo (single) - CD/12"
Polynomia (single) - CD/12"
Powerpill (under the Pacman name) - CD/12"
R&S Records RS 9201
"Digeridoo"
tracks: Digeridoo, Flap Head, Phloam, Isoprophlex
R&S Records RS 9209
"Xylem Tube E.P."
tracks: Polynomial-C, Tamphex (Headphuq mix), Phlange-Phace, Dodeccahedron
apparently he likes ph's... Digeridoo and Polynomial-C are listenable, but
the other tracks are all very harsh, very fast, and have a lot of distorted
samples, so they might not be your cup of tea. But both 12"s are worth
having for Digeridoo and Polynomial-C, though, which are what I would call
fast ambient techno. I hear he has over a hundred other compositions
written and plans to release most of them, but those two singles are all I
know about so far.

There is a place called the Laserium in London, where they bascially
sit you down in a planetarium, and shoot lasers all around w.
accompanying music. I saw this a few years ago, I'm sure they
must have a techno show by now.

Aphex Twins = Richard James from Truro in Cornwall , West Country , England.

Don't forget his first 12" Analougbe Bubblebath.

They mix really well, both being ethnic of origin, fast, funky,
and have ambient bits which mix great together -- they're in the
same key, even. :)
Oh yeah, shameless plug: My band (I.C.E) is on a compilation
called "Here Come the Sound Pirates" (Intrepid/Capitol). You
tossers in the U.S. can probably get it as a Canadian import.
It's mostly slower bpms, groovy (trance?) stuff, not particularly
hardcore techno (our two tracks clock in at 100bpm and 115bpm).
Tell me whatcha think.
