I guess IT IS within the legal bounds of the recording industry to make
these charges against Trax and Play De Record, but I think it has
generally been understood that DJ tapes promote the artists and
producers of the tracks as well as the DJ. AS it said in the Toronto
Star they have in the past turned a blind eye to this practice. In my
mind it is like busting people for home taping. I can't understand why
they moved in on these stores now. Fortunately it was only the Younge
street stores that got busted, the Queen Street stores had time to get
their tapes off the shelf.
As an aside, a dj friend of mine lost about 150 bux worth of promo tapes
that he had in those stores...
Anyway, I'll be anxious to see what develops from this situation. It's
just one more blow to the Toronto scene. Time to REALLY take the scene
back and go underground...for real.
