I've come across the notion of raving as a form of escape. I'm not here to
agree or disagree with the idea. I'd just like to know what you all think of
the idea. Do you think it is a way of escaping, and if so, an escape from what?

Well yeh sure :o) that is/was etc part of the reason i used to and still do
go 'raving' . I feel tho that i dont use it as a crutch to block out
problems , but yeh i do use it as a ways to for a few hours at least to
foget about my 'ickle problems' and stuff and just concentrait on the music,
dancing about, etc etc . But I still thuink the main reasons i go are for
pure enjoyment realy :) rather than a 'block out' , like say hardend 'rug
users / heavy dinkers may do.

Yep - I used it as an escape aswell, now it's purely for enjoyment and the sake of
dancing all night long. I've come far along into appreciating the music so much I
just can't see myself going to a club -

Well, i love raves because people only go there for a good time, the musics
awsome, and i can dance the night away. I dont go for an ''escape'' per se,
but i think everyone would agree that raves are not the same as your usual
day, so in a way they are an escape - Into an Unreal Place !

Raves can certainly be an escape.

An escape from doubt, greed, lust, ambition, lethargy, confusion, pain,
depression, hunger, violence, hate, seclusion, discrimination, anger,
boredom, hedonism, ego, silence, the cold world of the everyday...

But they are an escape only in the way that a hot bath is an escape from the
dirt. We don't go to forget, to hide, but to cleanse our collective psyches
of the filth that we've accumulated trudging through the day-to-day grime of
the environment we spend most of our lives in. When we emerge, we are ready
to face it again, and the sun coming up over the horizon seems brighter than
it ever has before.

I turned to 'raves' as an escape, it was the one area that I truly (and
still do) fitted in. I honestly consider 'us' as a family, I feel love for
fellow party goers (most of the time). The local scene here (SC) is so
tight, we all know each other and the feeling of belonging is incredible,
and despite what people think it is not a drug induced state of mind. I have
made so many new friends through music, some are moving on but we all stay
in touch, this may also be true of other scenes but I have little to no
experience with them so I'm not qualified to comment.

It's a temporary autonomous zone, and therefore extremely easy to get lost in
the moment. That's what I enjoy.

So sooo true... I've been around the Toronto Scene for 6 years now (yes I was
only 15) and man it's changedn grown really popular but all the what we call
ourselves "The Original TR Crew" we still keep in touch like a family -
actually I keep in touch with them more than I do with my actual family which is
quite sad

and as Molotov said - it seemed like the only place I actually still felt
comfortable to fit in - Learned alot in those 6 years too - been through bad
experiences and learn the hard ways.

Ha! Thanks a lot...

If I did, what should I write it about? Fiction, non-fiction, abstract
prose? What would I do with it once I wrote it? Would anyone read it?

It's much easier to write pretentious emails. :)

At its best, raving is an escape from the pretensions of the club scene,
from the xenophobia of the neigborhood, and from the crap that drags you
down during the week.
Its an escape into yourself, to figure out what went wrong, and
appreciate whats going right.

How 'bout a collection of pretentious emails?
"Stanley Jones on Life, Love and Everything: A compilation of alt.rave
rants"
I think that'd sell - I know I'd buy it

In article <20010924232958...@mb-mj.aol.com>,

Yes and No. Raves are like a vacation. Personally I think TV is much more of
an escape than raving. When raving your thinking and/or interacting with
real people. Also unlike TV raves generally don't consume peoples entire
waking lives.

the only question i have about that is what kind of music you listen
to at your raves. the ones i've been to in indy are just mindless
techno and trance created with expensive sampling equipment... not an
insult to the music altogether, just a question as to what is so good
about it? where's the talent?

Then what type of music are you into? Usually at a rave you are going to hear atleast one set of techno or trance unless
its like an all hardcore party or whatever. And just because you don't enjoy those types of music doesnt mean they are
mindless..

Hey cool, an Indykid! What's up?

I'm wondering about your question... What background are you coming from?
Are you saying that techno and trance are mindless compared to, say, jungle
and/or IDM (Aphex Twin, etc.)? Or, are you saying that it's mindless
compared to, say, punk and rock?

Either way, maybe you're listening too much with your mind and not enough
with your body. Certainly, ultracheesy trance is not much more than
in-your-face melody and some drums. But some trance is really intricate,
almost classical in structure. I find that I understand it better if I'm
moving along with it. It's *made* to be danced to.

By the way, is "mindless" bad?

Stan
