Senate passes measure to protect military funerals from protesters

WASHINGTON The U-S Senate has passed a bill to prohibit demonstrations
at military funerals that is similar to laws passed in Oklahoma and
several other states in the past month.

The federal bill like those in the states targets a Kansas church group
that's held demonstrations at military funerals across the country. The
group claims the deaths are a sign of God's anger at the U-S for
tolerating homosexuals.

The bill prohibits protests within 300 feet of the entrance of a
cemetery and within 150 feet of a road into the cemetery from an hour
before to an hour after a funeral. Those violating the act would face
up to a 100-thousand dollar fine and up to a year in prison.

A nearly identical bill passed the U-S House two weeks ago and
congressmen say the House is expected to accept changes made by the
Senate and quickly send the bill to the president.

As predicted, here and posted elsewhere - ACLU correctly sided with
Phelps against an infringment on 1st Amendment.

What about the laws of morality? Don't the family of a dead U.S soilder
have the right to peace at a funeral? I understand it's important to
protect the rights of everyone, but sometimes the law is wrong and
exceptions should be made. Some laws need to be changed. Phelps
serves the devil.

Well, Phelps claims morality is on his side. Many disagree, but the
question remains just what moral standard one uses. The moral standard
of most Americans claim gay people and minorities are inferior in God's
eyes.

One should never make exceptions to basic legal rights merely because
some bad people exploit those rights in an offensive way.
