Robber preys on gays met on-line
BY KARL ROSS, kr...@herald.com
WEST KENDALL – Miami-Dade police said Tuesday
that a man arrested last month in connection with two Kendall-area
robberies confessed to more than 100 similar crimes targeting gay
victims.
Orenthal James Green, 29, is a convicted sex
offender who preyed on men he met through an adult chat line and lured
with the promise of a homosexual tryst, police said.
Robbery Bureau Detective Sheldon Shapiro said
that after Green's arrest on April 14, Green laughed about targeting
gays.
"He said the reason he did it was because the
victims rarely report this type of crime,'' Shapiro said. "He said he's
done over 100 of these.''
Shapiro said Green was so brazen he even used
his true nickname – O.J. The better-known "O.J.'' – Orenthal James
Simpson – was a standout running back with the Buffalo Bills at the
time Green was born.
Sources in the gay community said violent crimes
targeting gays are infrequent or go unreported. Jerome Baker, a
publicist for several gay rights groups, called the crimes "awful'' but
said none of his contacts reported similar attacks.
Green was detained by police after a March 18
robbery in which the assailant picked up his mark in Richmond Heights
and pulled a butcher knife on him. The victim, an Overtown man who
handed over $70, refused to press charges after police hauled in Green.
The two had met on an adult chat line, police
said. Green was charged with the April 7 robbery of a Miami Beach
man
anticipating a sexual rendezvous. That crime took place at a shopping
center parking lot on 112th Avenue and Southwest 152nd Street, when
Green brandished "a large kitchen knife,'' police reported.
Police said that, on that occasion, Green
snatched the victim's cellular phone and car keys, but fled on foot.
Shapiro said Green was arrested a week later
when they said he tried to rob a man in the bathroom of the Denny's
restaurant on 193rd Street and U.S.
1.
Shapiro said Green is charged with robbery and
attempted robbery, as well as parole violation. He said Green is a
convicted sexual offender.
Green was convicted, Shapiro said, on charges of
sexual battery in the early 1990s in a rape case involving at least five
defendants. He has been out on parole since about 1995.
Shapiro said that if Green is convicted, he can
expect a lengthy sentence. "In this case, it's got to be at least a life
felony because of his priors,'' he said.
