THE ROANOKE TIMES
"MAN'S WEB AD BRINGS PROSTITUTION ARREST" SUMMARY: The suspect says he
was "hunted down" because he is gay. Roanoke County Police say they're
fighting prostitution, of any sort. A college student from Roanoke who
placed a personal ad with an online gay escort service was arrested last
week after arranging a money-for-sex rendezvous with an undercover
police officer. Roanoke County authorities say the arrest
was part of an ongoing investigation to target prostitutes working under
the guise of escort services. However, "TYLER", 25, says he was singled
out because of * his sexual orientation.
"They set me up from the Internet," "Tyler" said. "Something's wrong
when they can hunt you down."
"Tyler", a computer programming student who lives in
Southwest Roanoke, said he placed his personal ad several months ago and
didn't know it was with an escort service. He said the ad was low-key,
simply describing himself and saying he was "looking for someone for a
good time." He was just interested in
companionship, "Tyler" said.
But Detective S.H. Smith, who initiated the contact with
"Tyler", said the ad
caught his eye because of its headline - "ready and willing to
please" - and a
reference to prostitution in the return e-mail address. The ad appeared
on a
Web site titled "Gay Place Escorts," which included other ads that were
very
sexually graphic, Smith said.
"It appeared to be prostitution," Smith said. The ad
included a phone number that Smith recognized as being from the Roanoke
area. He called and set up a meeting with "Tyler" with the understanding
that there would be sexual acts for money. "Tyler" was arrested
Wednesday afternoon at the Sleep-Inn, on Electric Road in Roanoke County
- the prearranged meeting place. He was charged with prostitution after
he exchanged money with Smith, the detective said. Smith declined to
give a dollar amount.
"Tyler" doesn't dispute his agreement to accept money for
sex. On the phone,
when the caller asked him, "How much?" "Tyler" said he hesitantly named
a few
different prices. The caller also said he'd pay "Tyler's" cab fare. "I
was stupid enough," "Tyler" said. "When he offered me money, I took it
I'm a poor person who's emotionally disabled. There's drug problems out
there,
there's child abuse. They don't need to be targeting me." "Tyler" said
he spoke with a lawyer, but was told the event wasn't
entrapment
because he voluntarily agreed to accept money for sexual acts. "Tyler"
disagrees, and says he was framed. "My choices were manipulated," he
said.
"Tyler" also said he thought he was targeted because he is
gay. He said his arrest was similar to arrests in Wasena Park last
November, when 18 men were
charged with soliciting undercover police officers to commit a felony
-
"consensual sodomy."
Smith, however, said "Tyler's" arrest was the result of an
"on and off" investigation that started last spring to target
prostitution carried on under the cover of escort services. Detectives
first went through the phone book's
Yellow Pages and called various escort services to set up meetings.
Smith estimated there were about five prostitution arrests and another
five for the
women's drivers under the charge of transporting a person for the
purpose of prostitution.
No escort services were cited, Smith said, because the
owners claimed that the women were "freelancing" as prostitutes. In
October, the investigation turned to the Internet. Smith first contacted
a woman through a personal ad and exchanged e-mails before setting up a
money-for-sex meeting.
The woman, "Susan" of Franklin County, pleaded guilty to
prostitution in January, according to Roanoke County Assistant
Commonwealth's
Attorney John Alexander.
A woman who drove "Susan" to the meeting was also charged
and
convicted, Smith said.
Smith said he found the Web site for Gay Place Escorts when
he typed the words "Virginia" and "escorts" into an Internet search
engine. He found four
ads. "Tyler's", according to Smith, was "first on the list." "We're
doing prostitution in general," Smith said of the investigation. "We're
not making a blanket statement about escort services. There's nothing
targeted at homosexuals."
"It's a question of the activity," added Alexander, "not a
particular form of the activity."
In the city of Roanoke, police have made hundreds of
prostitution arrests in past years. Smith said county police only
started getting complaints about a year and a half ago, and those
primarily dealt with the way escort services were being run.
Alexander said he approved of the investigation, which he
said lets the community know that, while Roanoke County doesn't have
open-air prostitution, authorities are keeping their eyes on the
prostitution that does occur.
"If folks feel like nobody is paying attention, it'll
continue," Alexander said. "The purpose is just to make sure we're not
asleep at the wheel."
