Why do you like the man??? Seriously, everyone bar me seems to think the
sun shined out his ass. But I really, honestly can't see why. Can someone
please tell me why he is SO respected? As far as I can see, there's
average street-thuggin-it lyrics, cumbersome delivery, and a voice which
sounds like he's got a pitta bread lodged under his tongue.
But there must be something. Someone out there, tell me what makes Biggie
great so maybe I can grow to like the cat too.

Biggie was pretty average. You're not alone. I enjoyed his delivery style
personally, but very quickly got bored while listening to his songs.

I was more a fan of the production rather than his lyrics but he had a
distinctive voice imo. Something about his delivery and his voice that
made you stop and take notice. Chuch D of PE had that same quality in his
voice. I'm not saying that Biggie was anywhere near Chuck as an MC because
he most certainly wasn't. Chuck is just the best example that I can think
of right now for what it is about biggie's voice that appealed to me.
Listen (or read) some of his lyrics in like All bitches get money (Junior
Mafia - Conspiracy), and Brooklyns finest (Jay-Z - I forgot the name of the
album, i still smile when I hear him say "If faith has twins she'll have two
pacs, get it, tupac's"), Big Booty Hoes (I like hoes with big tits and nice
asses, educated, so I can bust up in they glasses - Jim Duke shoot, then the
bitch get the boot
unless she lick ass and blow dicks like flutes), juicy (of course, no need
for an explanation), Victory was good too. He was an overall abnormally
creative artist, and unfortunately led the path for other artists. The
reason I liked him a lot was because of his creativity, (Big Poppa "A t-bone
steak, cheese, eggs, and welches grape") which led to a good storytelling
background because once you can set up a scenario the plot is simple from
there. I still love listening to "I got a story to tell", only because of
how well he set up the scenario. Here's an excerpt from how he sets up the
scenaio:
Sweetness, where you parked at?
Petiteness but that ass fat
She got a body make a nigga wanna eat that, I'm fuck witchu
The bitch official doe, dick harder than a missile yo
Try to hit if she trippin dissapearin like Arsenio
Yo, the bitch push a double-oh
with the five in front, probably a connivin stunt
Y'all drive in front, I'm a peel with her
Find a deal with her, she fuck around and steal, huh?
Then we all get laced
Television's, Versacci heaven, when I'm up in em
The shit she kicked, all the shit's legit
She get dick from a player off the New York Knicks
Nigga tricked ridiculous, the shit was plush
She's stressin me to fuck, like she was in a rush
We fucked in his bed, quite dangerous
I'm in his ass while he playin gainst the Utah Jazz
My 112, CD blast, I was past
She came twice I came last, roll the grass
Notice how it isn't anything spectacular, but you can picture the situation.
That is what kept the listeners attention. As far as his delivery, it
helped me like him, but that's not WHAT I liked about him. For example I
jes can't flow with shyne. His delivery is quite similar but I'm just not
feeling it. Biggie wasn't a battle rapper, he was a creative artist and
that's what made him so diffrent, and why he stands out. That's the same
reason Eminem stands out, he is very creative. He takes phrases and thinks
of the associations and goes from there. Give a few of those somgs that I
mentioned a listen (or even read the lyrics on ohhla.com). You will
definetely understand afterwards.

Word is bond thun, you don't know? Y'all don't even understand MCing
then. It's all about the charisma and the way he emphasizes certain
words. See, y'all aren't even an MC, so how can you go and make a
judgement like that? Some of y'all geek asses on here don't know shit,
and all ya do is listen to them whiteboy backpacker cats. It's true
dun. Now, let me drop a gem on ya. Biggie was good because this one
time I was stylin down by the Tunnel with a fresh fade, a blue
Davoucci leather piece, some fly Dada kicks, and some Avirex jawns.
Shit was dope. So we get in, and I'm dancing up a storm, because I'm a
muthafucka who knows how to dance, ya know....not like them bitches
who wallpaper the club. And then this fly chickenhead steps up and
she's rubbing all over me, and I know she wants to worship the D, but
I play it off like "Naw man, I can get better than this", and just
straight up stoneface her. So anyways, about 2 songs later, Biggie
comes on, and his charisma was enough to not only get me one chicken,
but two. About two hours later I'm back at the crib, and these
cluckers is just tired as fuck because of the poundin I gave em. So
that's why Biggie was great. Although no one will ever top Nas, who
I'd willingly get on my knees for if I ever saw him on the street.

He is definitely OVERRATED, but he was a top-notch MC nontheless. This shit
about him being the greatest rapper in hip hop history is pure BS. But he has
proven that he has incredible lyrical wit and wordplay. Check that old shit he
dropped on Funkmaster Flex's 60 Minutes of Funk mixtape.

Give this shit up already. It doesn't matter how much charisma a cat has or
how much he emphasizes certain words, if his lyrics are garbage he's
garbage. And I can't feel Biggie's flow either because 75% you can't tell
what he's saying. Not saying Biggie's lyrics are garbage by any means btw,
better than 2001's crop......
" See, y'all aren't even an MC, so how can you go and make a judgement like
that?"
It wasn't a judgement, it was a enquiry. And I can make a judgement if I
want. I could drag out the old plumber metaphor again, but I won't.

Ish...and THAT's why I love biggie. I'm still more of a tupac fan though.
It's a really fucking funny story and perfectly showcases his
delivery, sense of humor and ability to tell a story.
Selected quotes:
"Baby mama screamin' 'your daughter's twelve months. Can't live life
slangin' rocks and smoking blunts.' Hanging with the niggaz doesn't
pay the bills and being broke at 30 gives a nigga the chills."
"I bought wifey a crib, the junior mafia an arcade. Mad games, lots of
candy because a little chicken loot be comin' in handy."
od you own "ready to die"? if not, get it. listen to it over and over
and over again. i've had it since it came out, and i too never jocked
biggie all that much. over the years i've gotten more and more out of it
than i had hoped. its one of the best albums ever. just listen to it and
you'll find rarely paralleled sickness in flows, lyrics and delivery. its
just outstand.
i don't have anything else by big, but just baseing my judgement on this
one LP, i can say he's one of the top MCs ever.
2nd statement:
"if you don't know, now you know... nigga"
biggies just something you gotta learn about on your own.
there's the whole 2pac vs biggie comparison a lot of cats have made... but
i don't consider pac in the league of biggie at all.. if that means
anything. its kinda weird that ad doesn't feel biggie... the only thing i
can think of is that ad hasn't listened to biggie enough. cuz big is dope
allthough, you don't like Illmatic from what i remember, so that may be
moot. natty, whats your AIM btw? amazed pudding is never online.
peace
spin/ spinsy1981 AIM with not enough time to hit RMHH as much as I would
like to
ghost and rae are nice, no doubt. but big overshadows them with MCing
abilities. outkast is a whole nother bag of apples... its hard to compare
them, OK is dope tho
pac really hit a mark with dumb kids who don't know shit about MCing. Pac
was good, and I love his shit... i got 2pacalypse Now when it came
out. but Big is the superior MC. he just didn't have the DMX-type
rowdiness that appeals to the mass audiences that Pac had.
so.. i think Pac is good, very good.. but Big is some shit you can
listen to as an MC and learn from... which Pac has never had

I like Illmatic better than RTD - which I find highly overrated. The Primo
track and Suicidal Thoughts are about the only songs I'd still listen to. The
Fat Joe thing was kind of just a dis - although I must say I'm more likely to
pull out Represent than I am Ready to Die.
