I guess some of you didn't agree with my picks for over and
underrated rappers, but I will continue to dwell on the negative and
list what I believe to be the top 10 most dissapointing of the
year.(Note, this takes into consideration the following
factors:Anticapation of Release, Previous Work By the Artist and
Popularity):
1.Outkast-Atliens: Compared to their first joint, this one was a total
piece of shit. Atliens was the fuckin' bomb track, but other than that
there was nothing on it worth mention. The first album had Ain't No
Thang, Player's BAll, SothernplayalisticCaddilacMusik, Git Up, Git Out,
Hootie Hoo just to mention a few. In fact SouthernPlayalistic..... was
probably one of the top 10 albums ever, period.
2.Mobb Deep-Hell on Earth-Compared to Infamous this was straight up
wack. All the beats sounded the same and all the rhymes had the same
kill 'Em, smoke it, bullshit content.
3.Aftermath-This album was incredibly wack, but I really don't think
most heads expected much. East/West Coast Killa was good, but other
than that there was nothing but shit raps, and bad R&B. Also fuck
RBX's crap track, there was nothing good about that track other than a
good beat. And all of you claiming that the only reason why RBX did
not run with Suge was because of his Muslim heritage, are talking out
of their ass. Suge did not want RBX rollin' with him. I can assure
you that sipping Cognac, Smoking Blunts and Shooting black people, all
things which RBX mentions in "Blunt Time", do not go along with muslim
ideals.
4.Snoop-Tha Doggfather-He gives us Doggystyle, then this. Well I guess
you can't repeat the greatest west coast recording ever.
5.Ghostface-Ironman-Really, this album wasn't bad, but considering the
fact two of his best songs, Winter WArz and Motherless Child had been
released more than a half year before on other albums, and many tracks
were simply wastes, it did not hold a candle to Liquid Swords, Tical or
36 Chambers.
You have to understand that people evolve.. Outkast (I personally know
Dre, he went out with my cousin Tracy at Tri-City years ago) has grown up.
The caddilliac, pimp a hoe rhymes are growing old. Their new album does
not have as tight production, I'll give you that, but the lyrical content
was better.
The Infamous was most def. better than Hell on Earth, but after repeated
listenings Prod's lyrics just make up for some of the repititive beats.
I think you should add Jeru, Nas and ATCQ to the list...

that's where you're messing up.

never heard all of the first one. (had an aversion to that "playa" junk)
i have no idea what you were expecting. what *were* you expecting?
ATLiens is boomin. & they talkin' about something.
can't think of anything there that i can't stand. even "ova da woods"
is a'ight. mainstream is the joint. what about jazzy belle?
the whole thing's got a mellow spacey feel to it.

I don't have their first and at the moment don't care either, but you
probably expected something like the first and what you got was not
it. I think the album is pretty dope. I checked the album because of
all the talk there was about it in this ng and I'm glad I did check
it.
>2.Mobb Deep-Hell on Earth-Compared to Infamous this was straight up

Don't have it don't care either. I can't get into the stuff they
create from what I have heard. It goes one ear in, the other ear out.

The album is still growing on me, but it's not going to be one hell of
a dope album though. The intro is very dope.

I was one of the first who said it was very good. Now that I played it
a lot, it's getting a little less good, but I still like it though.

Motherless Child ain't one of his best songs. It's cool, but not all
that. I like the album OVER Raekwon's or GZA's.
The most disappointing album of the year was Nas - It Was Written.
I don't know what was written, but it wasn't history with this piece.
I only liked a few songs.
BTW RBX is the shit.

Then add Redman. What the fuck? So you smoke weed, kid, who cares.
Talk about something else. The beats are ok. His flow is good, but,
gaddamn, he ain't got nothing to say.
I am also. I mean, its the same thing with Snoop's. Its not the
gangsta shit you hear everyday, and that's what makes it stand out alot
more than the rest of the albums. It has originality; something that is
hard to find these days. And their's sounds half-way decent. Jazzy
Belle, Mainstream, Wheels Of Steel, Two Dope Boys, and the others are
just bomb songs. I just can't get into Decatur Psalm, Millennium, E.T.,
and 13th floor.

Its not that the album is garbage. I happen to think that its one of
the best albums out there; I didn't like it at first, but it grew on me
ALOT. Specifically, Sixx Minutes, (o.j.) wake up, Downtown Assassins,
and a couple more (don't want to waste my time looking them up) were
great. Its a different approach for him because its that layed back
shit versus that gangsta hardcore shit that he did in Doggystyle. It
goes with the whole "Pimp/Playa" thing more than Doggystyle did.

"Beats, Rhymes, & Life" was the biggest let down for me in '96.
Half-assed production with overused loops (N.T. by Kool & The Gang...c'mon),(
uncreative and basically wack beats (except for "The Jam"). The lyrics were
also very forgettable. The whole LP made me yawn. I hate to say it but Tribe
fell off-hard! What a shame.

I disagree...yes the beats sound alike but after a while the aalbum gets much
better. Its peaks are Nightime Vultures, Hell on Earth, Give it up Fast, and of
course the excellent Drop a Gem..it's definately one of the better releases
thius year..

Tical was a piece of shit compared with any other Wu joints..I agree there may
have been a few loose tracks on Ironman but it is definately not a
dissappointment...on that note the two songs you mentionerd are overrated and
dissappointing compared to much better songs on the album as in Daytona 500,
Assassination Day and the humorous Wildflower, plus a few more..

I'm sorry, but this song wasn't "humorous" it was sick. I'm not a
picture of feminism, but that song was classless. I didn't have any humor
in it. It was dissrespect, and nothing but. That's my biggest beef with
hip-hop, some artists are so derogetory towards women. There's no need
for that kinda shit.

Nas-No comments needed...
Jeru. I love his first lp but the new one had boooring production+the
lyrics were predictable and not very good. On his first album, he
managed to attack gangster-rappers and crap-MC's in a good way (see
"Come Clean") but on the new one he didn't. I mean, he doesn't have to
tell us that Puffy and his friends suck, we already know that! It's too
obvious...
Mobb Deep-I never liked them much in the first place but the new album
was extremely boring and uninspiring. The production was just one big
yawn and the lyrics... well, those guys are REALLY hard. They rob and
kill!! Wow!!! I will sell it today...
So I guess Nas had a lot to say when he was rockin' a pussy pink flamingo
suit in that video wit that Frank Sinatra look a like or whoever the fuck
that was.
I guess Mobb Deep had a lot to say when they was talking about..well,
whatever the fuck they said that was important on their last album.
I guess ATCQ had a lotta new shit to say when they album came out, but
they just ain't say it..
Who tha fuck DID have something important to say in 1996? Lets pick up NG
favorites Fugees, The Roots, Ras Kass, De La, and all the other real MC's
Other than that, 96 was the year of Versace, hoes, cheddar, more versace,
the Lex, the Beamer, the Benz, the Versace, the Cristal, the blunt,
Versace, Gats, murder, cops, prison, Versace, more hoes, Crossroads, the
player, the pimp, 2pac, and,of course, Versace.
I'd rather listen to a lil weed and some phat lyrics than all that other
bullshit anyday. Unless you figure that shit was important to talk about,
I'd like to know what the hell you'd have to say if you was dropping an
album. Start with Versace, I heard it does a lot for record sales...
Redman's album was tight so don't sleep, Sleepy (the name fits..)

I'm sorry, Nightchild, but outside of being a fashion statement, Nas'
choice of suit has absolutely NOTHING to do with his music. Nor do his
videos. Now, if you dissed his lyrics, that's one thing, but attacking his
choice of clothing? Kinda trivial.

fuck comparing albums. standing on its own, ATLiens is a tight album.
Artists progress...Outkast decided to evolve their sound. The album
strikes me as being very mature. All of my favorite artists up the ante
and mature a bit between their first and second albums: Pharcyde, Tribe,
and the Alkoholiks come to mind...their songs become more topical and
focused on the second go-round, Roots make this change from DYWM to
Halflife...in the sense that the lyrics go up another notch...
ATLiens is fresh. everyone who doesn't have it, should get it.
waiting for goodie mob's second joint...and common's third...
