Haven't bought many albums this year, but from what I bought it is
hard just to pick one.
So let's say a tie between:
Dre - 2001
Eminem - The Slim Shady LP
Dr. Dooom - First Come, First Served

Runner ups tie:
Kool Keith - Black Elvis/Lost In Space
Red & Meth - Blackout
GZA - Beneath The Surface

Best surprise of the year (pay attention this is my opinion):
Ice T - 7th Deadly Sin
Return Of The Real only had a few dope tracks, this was a lot better.

It's a tie between:

Material - Intonarumori (feat Flava Flav, Kool Keith, Mr. Len, Eddie Def, Lori Carson, Killah
Priest and others)

Inspectah Deck - Uncontrolled Substances

on my stereo: lida husik - fly stereophonic

film: felicia's journey (the usually reliable Mr. Egoyan strikes out)

Em's album had some OK stuff on it. Good for a novelty record.

Inspectah took a while to grow on me and now is my favorite besides the brilliant Material record
'Intonarumori' (feat Flava Flav, Killah Priest, Mr. Len, Kool Keith). If you haven't heard it,
check it out on Axiom (Bill Laswell aka Material's label).

Oh yeah, honorable mention to Kool Keith and Dr. Dooom for 2 more funky and weird records.

I'll second this for one of the best (along with Mos Def). Have to respect
the Axiom label...

Always a worthwhile debate,
I rate all these:

> 2) Soundbombing 2
> 3) The Roots - Things Fall Apart
...but this is a bit fanatical 4) The Roots - A Live One

> 5) Prince Paul - Prince Amoung Thieves (was this '99?)

hmmm, dunno, and wasn't Blackalicious quite fucking awesome?

and I know it ain't rap, but big up to Rob Swift for some deckmeister
cuts, pushing boundaries for the era.

and to be Honest, Eminem is the first rap I've tried to get friends to
listen to since Erik B when I was a kid, and then I had to get all the
rare mp3s off the net too, so big up Marshall Mathers.

Maybe I missed the release guidelines for this poll (were there any?), but
Aquemini dropped in september of 98. Dope album, though (think i;m the
only cat who likes southernplayalistic...better).
