I will be stuck in Cali for about 2.5 weeks (you can tell I'm a NYC boy!) and
I was wondering if there was any hip-hop on the radio out there. Any pointers
would be greatly appreciated!
Peace out,
mlb
Well I used to live in Oakland so I should know this...
Offhand I can think of two kinda jammin stations: 106.5 KMEL and 107.7 KSOL.
KSOL used to be hella jammin but now they kinda in that R&B love-triangle shit.
88.9 KPOO is a real dope rap station but not sure exactly when they do it.
There might be some other stations but it's been so long I cain't remember.
Peace.

I was home last spring (Vacaville CA just north of the city) Try KSOL and
there is a station I beleive that it is based in Berkeley. It's KBLX but I
can't remember the numbers. Check out the Chronicle, it should have a pink
insert called the Datebook or something and that should have all of the radio
stations listed and what they play. If you are into clubbing, check out the
Palladium nightclub down off of Telegraph. It's a pretty good dance club
especially if you are going to be there on New Year's eve.

106.5 KMEL and 107.7 KSOL are probably the ones you want. Yes, I noticed
that KSOL has changed, but they have the "earthquake" show which is pretty
good (I don't know what time it starts but watch out of it!).
Anyone know if Cameron Paul still mixes for KMEL or KSOL? Haven't heard from
him in a while....

106.1 KMEL is the reigning champ. They have a large stable of good
re-mixers/djs, a bunch of loudmouths in the morning, a bunch of loudmouths
in the afternoon drive, and a bunch of retards all the other times. Except
for King Tech and the WakeUp show on Fridays and Hosh Gurelli at 3am on
Sunday morning it's basically a Top Dance 40 station. Watch out for
Hammer's insipid "Street Soldiers" show. Cameron Paul got booted. He
charges they wanted kickbacks, they say he improperly used the station to
advance his recording career. It's big corporate radio at it's finest,
masquerading with a street level sensibility.
107.7 KSOL Former champs but now serious chumps. All those remixers KMEL
have now used to work for KSOL. They have KMEL's leftovers in the morning,
nobodys in the drive, and nobody else any other time. Their mixers are
earnest if occasionally incompetent. They're actually a little more diverse
than KMEL, but the really nagging problem is a general level of
incompetence at the station. I tried to switch for my background noise fix
but really dumb shit like records skipping, tapes warbling for minutes, djs
messing up live, the hiring of Ron Engelman ( the aforementioned KMEL's
leftovers ), etc. made me practically give up. What they really need to do
is act more professional and stop trying to be KMEL and they might have a
chance.
Last note: natives of the area inform me that KMEL was once "The Camel", a
classic rock station. The times, they have a changed.
