So.. who saw Arsenio last night? Grandmaster Flash, Mc Lyte,
ICE-T, Dinosaur Jr. and Del..

It was very interesting. I haven't seen Flash in years, besides
the occassionally playing of one of his videos.. He seems kinda
outta touch with what's going on, but he did say some things that
made a lot of sense. Things seemed kinda of tense between him and
Ice-T, too.

Ice-T also had a lot to say. The best line of the entire show was
after Arsenio asked him a question, and Ice-T said, half laughing,
"Man, that's the stupidest question I think you've ever asked me".

Del and Dinosaur, in my opinion, did not deserve to be on the show.

Anyways, all in all it was a pretty interesting show.. Ice-T
again proved himself to be one of the more articulate rappers...
Flash proved that he has absolutely no idea how to dress. Didn't
anyone try to tell him that the whole vest, turtleneck, hat thing
just wasn't happening?

Greg.

I was lovin it when Ice-T said DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince was
"Disneyland" (or whatever) rap, and his rap was like a Stephen King novel.
Then he added that he wasn't saying that "Disney" rap was "bad" - "Just don't
tell Stephen King to write a novel for Disney". Very cool.

I liked Del...thought that Dinosaur's music was like some unneccesay
extracarricular shit that fucked up the song.

..mucho props to the hip-hoppin Flava KSYM 90.1 in San Antonio for adding at
least some enjoyment to my visit to that city this weekend.

i kind of got to hand it to fresh prince for not trying to be something
that he is not by trying to recite "hard core" rap. to me, fresh prince
appear to obviously not be from compton, "south central", &c so for him
to rap about all that kind of stuff would be pretty phony - there are a
lot of rapper of whom i can't say the same. my guess is that he probably
grew up in what would be considered a pretty good neighborhood. seems
that before his rap/entertainment career took off, he was planning to
go to mit to study computer science. i kind of doubt that he went through
with the mit bit, but does anyone know if he completely blew off the
education situation after high school?

as far as ice-t and steven king, well, i'm not real big on stephen king.
guess that explains why i'm not real big no ice-t's stuff for the
most part [then again, i don't care particularly for fresh prince either].
i don't know where he gets his popularity from since he doesn't impress
me as being a particularly good rapper.

That is what really pisses me off about "Boom! Shake the Room".

1. It has got to use the most played sample of all time, worse even than
listening to the new Shaq. OK it's a funky loops but it's played like the
San Francisco Giants

2. Fresh Prince sounds good when he does a laidback "Summertime" or a
humerous "Girls Ain't Nuttin But Trouble" rap... but on "Boom!" he's hyper
like he's trying to be hard, sort of like that other "Joe"

3. Biting the Spice 1 stutter style gets him ZERO props in my book! Yo
FP, get off his dick!

"summertime" is the *one* fresh prince tune that i actually liked.
fp does seem a bit out of his element on "boom..." but then i don't
care for his stuff in general anyway. course i don't really go for
his tv show either...

I baught Rock The House way back when it first came out and I liked it. Some
songs were funny, the rest I just enjoyed. "A Touch Of Jazz" was one of the
first jazz/rap songs I'd heard. After that it's just not the same. He seemed
less creative and less willing to let Jazzy Jeff go off on the turn tables
which he can do with master skill. I borrowed "...And In This Corner" from a
friend and found it boring, although I thought the video for "I Think I Can
Beat Mike Tyson" was funny. What was before that...oh yeah, "He's The DJ, I'm
The Rapper". I borrowed that one, too, and found it to be, eh, ok, but nothing
worth buying. (I hated "A Nightmare On My Street" mostly because I'm a huge
Freddy Krueger fan and this was a half-assed song. Although, the Fat Boys'
song with Freddy was dope.) I haven't really given Fresh Prince a serious
thought since. I liked "Summertime", but not enough to make me run out and buy
the album. And I think "Boom! Shake the Room!" rips off a record number of
other artists.

Speaking of The Fat Boys.... has anyone heard The Fat Boys'
tape from a year or so ago? I guess Prince Marky-D (or whatever..
Markee-D how do ya spell it?) left and now you have the 'Fat Boys:
Hefty Posse'! Consisting of good ol' Human Beat Box and Cool Rock..
The album is a year or so old...it's called MackDaddy...(how original).
At least Marky-D is having a semi-successful solo career...
It looks like Cool Rock and Buffy there have hit rock bottom...

Heard it, have it, sort of like it. I think it's older than that though. It
came out before MixALot's Mack Daddy, so it must be at least 2 years old now.
Anyway, it's not half bad. They're not the same with just Kool Rock rhymin',
and there's nothing really memorable on the album. But, I don't think it was a
total waste of money. It got some decent play in my car for a couple weeks.

I think the reason he's having success is that he has changed his style. He's
doing something new. In a way he's starting over. Kool and Buffy are still
sticking with the Fat Boys image, which, IMO was wrecked with the release of
the pathetic "On And On" and totally destroyed when Mark left. They need to
hook up with some other people; add more members to the Hefty Posse, and start
over. I think they could come back with some good stuff. I havn't written
them off totally.
