Could anyone fill us in on the exact nature of De La's beef with Prince
Paul, and also with nameless members of Native Tongues.

I ask this, becuase I noticed a lyric on the new De La LP which is along
the lines of "I'd rather [something unpleasent - I forget] than drop a
rhyme for Prince Paul". What happened - I always thought Prince Paul
and De La were real close. I'd assumed that the decision to use other
producers for "Stakes is High" was because Paul wasn't available, or
maybe just to try something new?

Whassup?

Foolish mortal...

the line dove says is:
"...a dime will make a call, i'd rather hop on the line and drop a rhyme
to prince paul / 'cause its a dog eat dog ..."

there's no beef de la has with prince paul. the reason he really didn't
work on this album is because he didn't want to. that's it. no beef.
no drama.

as for the native tongues, in a recent interview, posdnous said there was
some static, but that its been resolved. as he says on the title cut to
Stakes Is High, "the native tongues have officially been reinstated!"

apparently, pos was upset at the fact that certain people claimed to be
down with native tongues, but once aboard, were never seen or never
contributed. they sort of used native tongues as a launching pad for
their own crews (black sheep, latifah, monie, etcetera). pos reinforces
that native tongues, in his mind, was and always will be just de la,
quest, and jungle. look for all three to blow shit up again this year.

Its' no beef. The line from Dove is "...a dime will make a call / I'd
rather hop on the line and drop a rhyme to Prince Paul."
No beef, see. The reason why PP isn't producing on this album is
because he didn't want to. he's got too many side projects apparently.

Speaking of De La... what's up with their names? Posdnuos and
Trugoy... now, Trugoy backwards is Yogurt, but Posdnuos is Soundsop, and
I just don't get the "sop" part... does anyone know what the significance
of either name is?

I had the chance to interview De La Soul in Cleveland in March after
their show with Camp Lo. First of all the trio is so mellow and down to
earth that it surprised me. I was interviewung them for my college
hip-hop mix show. Pos told me some of the producers on the new album
"Stakes is High" they include: himself, Q-Tip, a brother named X who did a
remix for "Ego Trippin" as well as some cuts for Illegal and Erick Sermon,
and O.G. who is down with BuckWild (he produces a joint on the new album
called "For More" with Zhane). The album will also feature guest
appearances from Most Def (from Brooklyn), Q-Tip, Ino Rock (from Long
Island) and some surprises.
All three said that they were growing and that they felt like working
with some new heads on this album and that there is no beef at all with
Prince Paul. Also as said in "The Bizness" the Native Tongues are
reinstated this summer with albums from De La, Tribe, and the Jungle Bros.
(with some cuts produced by DJ Premier) bringing true hip-hop to the
masses. Dave (Truguoy) said "We felt we had to make a statement on where
hip-hop is going and where the youth involved in hip-hop is going." Pos
stated that the stakes are indeed high because "hip-hop right now is
unbalanced as an artform."
Everyone who loves hip-hop needs to buy this album, it is
essential. I can't wait for "Stakes is High" to drop.
Peace,

I had the chance to interview De La Soul after a show in March at the
Odeon in Cleveland with Camp Lo. (De La ripped it lovely). They really
don't have a beef with Prince Paul or the Native Tongues (which is really
just a thing in the past). "Stakes is High" is 15 cuts deep and it
includes production from X, who did an "Ego Trippin" remix as well as
joints for Illegal and Erick Sermon, the brother produces a cut called
"Dininit" (the ESPN jingle) on the new album. O.G. who is down with
Buckwild produces a cut called "For More" with Zhane and Pos and Q-Tip
have some production also. The three wanted to work with with some new
heads on the album and Prince Paul has other projects he is involved in
so there is no beef, both parties had to grow.
Some guest appearances include: Most Def an MC from Brooklyn, Ino Rock
an MC from Long Island, Zhane, Q-Tip and a few surprises. De La was mad
cool and extremely down to earth. Pos stated that the stakes are high
because "currently hip-hop as an artform is unbalanced." The new album
should be a classic. Dave (Truguoy) said, "We felt we had to make a
ststement on where hip-hop is going."
The Native Tongues are reinstated because De La, Tribe, and the Jungle
Bros. (with some production from DJ Premier) are dropping albums soon.
Thank God. True hip-hop is coming back so along with these three groups
and MC's like Jeru, suckas like Tupac, BIG, and their nut hugging clones
better take cover. Peace.

Posdnous comes from spelling Soundsoperator backwards, and cutting off the
'erator' part (or 'rotare' backwards).

Yogurt is just... well.. yogurt.

I remember during when "Potholes In My Lawn" was getting play on BET,
Trugoy simply said he was a big fan of Yogurt, so he got that name. And
if anyone wants to talk about the Wu having loads of names, lets remember
that De La were all up in this long before the Wu-Tang Clan became
anybody:

Posdnuos = Plug One = Pos
Trugoy The Dove = Plug Two = Dove
(during an interview on BET, Trugoy was shown as being "Rahlow". On De
La Soul is Dead, Rahlow is supposedly his crackhead cousin. But...Pos
was Pos, but Trugoy was "Rahlow")
P.A. Pasemaster Mace = Plug Three = Mace = Maceo

******

As for the meaning of "sound sop", I've never been able to figure that
out either. It might be "sounds of p", p being anything from peas to P-
Funk to peace.

******

And yes, there is a slight Wu connection here too. I guess Prince Paul
didn't do anything on De La's album. Will it work without the Doo Doo
Man's touch? Prince Paul, who is a Gravedigga, is hard at work on a
Gravediggaz album. Rumor has it The RZA isn't doing much on that project
either. We all know how Public Enemy sounded when the Bomb Squad fell
off.

******

All I can say is, let the Native Tongue Vibe return with style. Where in
the hell is Lakim Shabazz and Chill Rob G?

Huh? Prince Paul produced the 1st Gravediggaz LP. So if RZA is not
playin too much of a part in his role as a Rapper, how does that mean
Gravediggaz is gonna fall off?

Anyway, PE still had plenty of dope joints without The Bomb Squad....

The "sop" portion of his name is because he "sops up sound" like bread sops up soup.

See, now I'm all jealous 'cause it seems like I'm the only person
around here who never interviewed De La Soul... dang, life is just hollow.
