I think that answering this question for all of us will help eliminate
much confusion among the "pros" and the "antis". It seems a lot of
people in both camps use the "hip hop=rap" when it comes to their
advantage and deny the connection when it doesn't. So, I want
everyone's input on what they consider to be the difference between
rap and hip hop.

I sometimes ponder with this sometimes too. Hip-hop is more of a culture
factoring clothing b-boying and break dancing. Rap is more used with the music
instead of culture.

So would you say that Rap is the music of the hip hop culture? A lot
of people say that rap music and hip culture are seperate, but not
musically exclusive genres. My whole goal with this question is so
that we can set a standard here on what's "rap" and what is "hip hop"
in order to prevent useless bickering.

I am still yet to find the explamation myself. It depends on who you ask. One
person might hip-hop and rap are two different musics, others will say rap is
the music of hip-hop. I have no real opinion on the issue. I say call it what
you want.

In my opinion hip hop is "now" a word used to describe the whole
culture, rap as DR says being the music.

I feel hip hop has become a trendy word and is often used in the wrong
context.

How much more ignorant can ya get? Hip Hop is NOT "rap with a fancy dress"
(chuckle). You're thinking that rap is Grandmaster Flash (which is true), but
Hip Hop is only commercialized 90's rap. First of all, Hip Hop is a CULTURE. A
culture that erupted in New York City (the Mecca of Hip Hop, or the South
Bronx, to be specific) in the early seventies. Graffiti Art, which is one of
the elements of Hip Hop, started getting popular around this time, along with
Breakdancing (another element). Kool Herc, the first DJ (DJing is another
element of Hip Hop) to use two turntables, played beats and music in the parks
in the South Bronx. Grandwizard Theodore, also from the South Bronx, invented
the "scratch". Soon, DJing with two turntables and "scratching" became popular
among the clubs, and parks in New York City. These DJs would begin to pick
people out of the crowd, to rhyme to the DJ's beat... the rhymes had no
point... they were just rhyming for fun. This was the birth of the MC (aka
Rapper)
Hence, Hip Hop is held together by four elements: Graffiti, Breakdancing,
DJing, and MC'ing. This modern urban culture would soon spread all over the
globe. Next time, know what the hell you are talking about. It's clear that
you're an MTV'er since you think that Hip Hop is commercialized rapping. LMAO!

LOL! What's the difference between b-boying and breakdancing???

Hip Hop is a subculture formed with the union of 4 elements: Rap, Breaking,
DJing, Graffiti

There are also other "sub-elements" that are involved in Hip Hop. Your
Attitude, Beatboxing, Low Riders, the way you dress, how you look at the world,
anything close to that kind of stuff...

Your music evolved from hip hop you moron. Korn use MC's like Ice Cube
he is as raplike as they come. I don't know eve6 very well so I wont
comment but I guess you like limp bizkit they have an emcee and a dj for
fucks sake. You really are a retard. (Did your mom drop you on your head
at birth?) You listen to rap metal/ rap rock/ skate metal/ skate rock
call it what you want it is a combination of rap and metal, so how the
fuck can you dis rap. I'm trying to work you out.

Boy, did this guy have some SERIOUS problems. But what was really
funny is he compared the substance and sound of rap to a band
like...like....like RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE!!!
LOL!

Rap is actually one of four elements of hip hop also known as 'EMCEEING'. Hip Hop is a culture. Once rapping became popular and profitable, it became synonymous with hip-hop.
