I have a slight interest in steam locomotives.

I was born in Adelaide South Australia and recall seeing one of the steam
'Mountain Engines' hauling the Melbourne Express (The Overland) over the
Adelaide Hills many years ago. I was suitably impressed.

I saw this area pop up on News groups and seeing there is nothing in it,
thought I might pop a note in despite it not being a true
'locomotives.uk.class37'
topic.

I have since, although no longer living in South Australia, visited the
National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide on a trip to Adelaide a couple of
years back.

I think the 504 'Tom Barr Smith' was one of the engines to haul the
Melbourne Express up the Adelaide Hills (Mt Lofty Ranges), it is located at
this museum.

//The giant 500 class was South Australia's heaviest and most powerful steam
locomotive. The 504, named Tom Barr-Smith, hauled passengers and goods
trains over the steep gradients and tight curves of the Mount Lofty Ranges.
The loco was built by: Sir W.G. Armstrong-Whitworth & Co.,
Newcastle-on-Tyne, England. It was 84ft 2in long, weighed 222 tons 6cwt, had
a boiler pressure of 200p.s.i. and tractive effort of 59,000 lbs, water
capacity of 7,000 gallons and carried 11 tons of coal. Number 504 was placed
into service 18 October 1926 and officially condemned on July 1962. It
entered the Railway museum on 23 July 1965 after having completed 855,029
miles. Number 504 in (2007) is located at Port Adelaide as a static display.
