Hi.
My son wants to be able to take his xbox game console with him on a trip
from NY to Florida. Do the sleepers have sufficient power and also can the
xbox video feed the tiny little screen in each sleeper? Is there a
jack/connector for video input on the screen/tv?

Thanks,
Walleye

In article <wk%la.51083$Xd1.17...@news4.srv.hcvlny.cv.net>, in
misc.transport.rail.americas, pitn...@hotmail.com says...

Sorry, no external input to the tv screen in the sleepers. Besides, I
don't know how clean the power is coming out of those outlets. And unless
you're getting one of the large sleepers, there isn't enough room for the
xbox and humans to coexist in those small spaces.

Don't know.

Wouldn't your son get a whole lot more out of the trip by looking out
the windows
and talking to actual people. That's what you're supposed to do on a
train. I don't want
to be condescending, but I think the boy could survive just fine without
video games for the duration of the trip.

You are right but my 14 year old is waaaaaaaaayyyyyy into his game console.
And I too believe that he can survive the 29 hour train ride without his
video games.
From what I can tell there isn't a video input on those screens so that
solves my problem.

Thanks!

Instead of depending on whether there is a way to connect to the small
TV why not try some actual parenting? Repeat after me...NO Johnny,
you CAN NOT play with your XBox...Repeat that until you are sure of
yourself and then try it on your kid. I am a parent, if that makes a
difference.

It's not perfect but it depends on the characteristics of your power
supply.. My old Dell laptop's international power supply with
variable voltage and amperage input capability handled Amtrak power
perfectly for two return trips of 3-4 days each way over the last two
years..

I know it's a moot point since you'd need a portable TV of some
description too, and that's pushing the bounds of reality, but it's
worth noting anyway..

Ah, makes me glad my wife and I decided to raise our kids without TV and video
games. They do occassionally watch something on TV at home (very
occassionally!) and get videos at gradma's. It solves the whole "trip" problem.
They've already learned to entertain themselves. It made the 12-hour trip to
Kansas (1 day) more enjoyable. It also helped that I left at 4:30 in the
morning, I suppose...

I wish I could add something constructive, but I'm out of my element on this
one. I have to go with Dave. He'll just have to survive without his xbox for a
few days. He's actually going to have to interact with people. If he's not too
good at it, he'll learn. Probably the best thing for him. The employment world
is certainly no video game. You haven't said his age, but I'm figuring 9-13.
It's time to start practicing for the real world.

I'm not trying to be rude, but I just don't get it. If a kid can't pull his
head out of the TV, what's the point of taking him on a trip? I'd be happy to
discuss it off-list if my remarks seem offensive. Perhaps I could clarify
myself better.

FWIW, I know a widow at my kids' school. She has 6 kids and doesn't even own a
TV. Probably solved a lot of fights right out of the gate with that. No arguing
over who's watching what. <VBG> Of course, their friends probably have TVs...

By now, I'm WAAAAY off the point, so I'll just drop it.

I've taken quite a few trips in sleepers and in coaches with
power connections, and I've run my cell phone and tape player
/ radio off of the supplied power. You have to be prepared for
temporary outages, but I've never had problems with any
of the equipment.

I am quite sure the original poster was simply trying to find out what could
and could not be done on the compartment's TV. No doubt it wasn't a do or
die request, just an "I wonder?" I am sure Little Junior has been told by
now that his Xbox will have to stay in the suitcase, and he plans to bring
some books, or gasp....interact!

My understanding of HEP, err, head end power, is that it does go up
and down sometimes depending on the model of the locomotives up front
and how hard they're running, but if it does spike, it's usually only
when power is being reconnected if something goes wrong..

Yeah. It's a shame there's no auxiliary input. But then some schmoe would
probably plug in a porno eventually...
