A dove imprisoned within a cage. An athlete with tethered limbs. An
artist deprived of materials. Nick Abbot on Talk Radio.

All share a common torture. Each one has had the right to express itself
in its individual excellence taken away in a cruel and nonsensical
manner.

I had, until recently, not heard of Nick Abbot. Due to terrible
reception
I am unable to receive Virgin, especially during the time period that
Nick apparently broadcast within. However I am grateful to Talk Radio
for the brief insight over the last couple of weeks into what I am sure
was a unique and glittering career.

I talk in past tense because I sincerely feel that despite Nick's Talk
Radio spot being wholly entertaining I have listened to a man who has
been restrained beyond acceptability.

I am not blaming Talk Radio. Indeed I applaud them for reviving this
undisputed talent, if only for an all too brief moment in time.

The culprits, nay villains in this piece are the RADIO AUTHORITY.

A self governed, self righteous, self opinionated QUANGO that deems to
impose and safeguard the Victorian ideals of a handful of Mary
Whitehouse supporters by bludgeoning to death original and raw talent
the like of which I have merely glimpsed in the form of Nick Abbot these
last few nights.

Of course Nick is not alone. Talk has showcased to the nation several
unique and 'dangerous' talents that have all gradually disappeared like
some poor victims of a south American dictatorship in the night. The RA
may not be directly responsible for all these missing stars but the foul
odour of its menace breathing hot down the neck of our favourite station
has surely been unbearable on more than one occasion.

I am not calling for deregulation. Socially we are still very immature
and unfortunately there are sections among us that need protection. But
please RA I implore you do not destroy the very thing that this country
excels at - originality. If television is allowed to extend its hand
into the darkness of creative expressionism please do not deny this
right to radio.

I hope that Nick Abbot will be allowed to carve his name into his own
personal locker at Talk Radio very soon. And I hope that having taken
his seat and pulled up the mic he will then be allowed to do what he
evidently does best - without chains, without restraint and without
further ado.

Yours

Adam

I think its better now that he is holding back a bit. I think he used to
go over the top at Virgin. Not only taking the piss out of the callers,
but actually being abusive. The last straw at Virgin was apparently after
he had repeatedly slagged of an individual. That person complained to the
Radio Authority and after several complaints, they slapped a massive fine
on Virgin. Nick had his phone-in show axed, and was reduced to doing what
he currently does at VMR: cuing and playing records.

Already in his first show he called somone from the Guardian a "bitch" for
having the audacity to suggest that he was a risk for Virgin, having only
been on VMR previously (she had forgotten about Luxembourg).

He still takes the mickey out of his listeners, which is one of the main
reasons for listening to him, so I can't see the problem. I just get bored
of the Shock Jocks like Caesar...

By the way, can anyone confirm if he is related to Ray, the bloke
inflicted with a permanently sarcastic tone of voice? (Mary Whitehouse
Exp.)

I reckon they will find a permanent slot for him soon. By holding him
back, the more easily offended listeners won't have switched off, while he
brings in his fans from "the other places".

By the way, I am not particularly offended by what he was doing at Virgin,
its just that after a while it became boring. I mean, he slags of James
Whale for basing his career on cutting people off.

If you're talking about Caesar, he wasn't sacked because of the RA, but
because he talked crap, and so couldn't get anything except cult
audiences. Nick Abbot has the advantage is that he is obviously
intelligent, so would be better.

Fingers crossed...

No way! It's clear he's only holding back because (a) he doesn't want to screw
up his chances of getting a permanent fixture on the station and (b) his
producer "Kev" (or "captain bleep"!) is holding him back kicking & screaming!

IMHO the show will be MUCH better and will completely regain it's original
charm once he's given his own show (and the sooner the better!) and the
leashes are removed at last! :-)

Victorian values? Oh yes, sticking your maids up the duff, Jack The Ripper,
death, disease and putting kids up chimneys, thems were the days..........
