Radio Scandals: Hendrie, Tammy, Laura, Maria and Art

have some kind of strange breakdown on the air. Next, pictures of Laura
baring witness surface. Now, Tammy Bruce is going after Phil Hendrie and
his wife, Maria Sanchez. What's next. Will we see some weird film of
Rush and a walrus frolicking in a run down Tijuana motel? I don't think
I could handle that.
For those of you who haven't heard, Bruce has filed a complaint against
her ex-employer, KFI, for sexual harassment. She claims that Hendrie and
others persecuted her for being a lesbian and that Hendrie and Sanchez
were trying to get her to join them in a threesome. Somehow, those two
charges don't seem to go together.
I should note right here that I'm a Hendrie fan, but I also think that I
can objectively say that I see a few other problems with Bruce's story.
First, while it's true that Hendrie makes many homophobic statements on
his show, it's obvious that he is simply satirizing bigotry. When others
call his show and attack gays, he's quick to jump on them hard. I heard
him do it a number of times when callers called Bruce a dyke during one
of his "Who Sucks at KFI" segments. BTW, I always pulled for Laura to
win, but Tammy always gave Jon and Ken a run for the money for second
place in my book.
He's also noted that he's very good friends with Neil Rogers, who is
very open about his homosexuality. Indeed, he calls Neil his mentor and
was very critical of the management at Neil's former station when they
fired him. I just can't believe that Phil is a homophobe.
I don't know what Bruce's problem with Maria is all about. She claims
that Maria came onto her at dinner some time before Maria married Phil.
All I know is that in the weeks leading up to the wedding, Bruce
attacked Maria on the air many times claiming that Maria was Mexican,
but was too racist to admit it. I was shocked at the viciousness of her
attacks. I wonder why a lesbian would be so angry at a beautiful woman
for hitting on her. There is more to the story somewhere.
I've always thought Bruce was a bit unstable. Can there be anything more
pitiful than a conservative lesbian? There is some heavy duty cognitive
dissonance going on there.
Of course Hendrie handled it beautifully. Only he could turn something
like this into a teaser for his show. He began by saying that he was
very hurt and angry. He stated that he'd been told not to talk about
what was bothering him, but he had a gnawing feeling in his gut and he
had to say what he thought. He warned us that he could get ugly when
he's that angry, but damn it, he couldn't let it fester any longer. He
went on like this for twenty minutes.
I'm sure that Tammy was just as glued to the radio as I was waiting for
him to go off about her accusations. Finally, he just blurted it out.
He'd seen a picture of himself in a magazine and realized that he was
very ugly. It was a revelation that struck him hard, because he'd always
considered himself to be fairly good looking. Now he new the truth.
I'm sure Tammy was very disappointed.
