THE MIAMI HERALD

STAR DJ BUSTED FOR INDECENT EXPOSURE

Friday, January 31, 1992

Dressed in a Florida Marlins T-shirt and slacks, Neil Rogers sat alone
Wednesday night in the back row of a dark theater showing a
three-hour, sexually graphic film. Two plainclothes Miami Beach police
officers say they saw him masturbating. They arrested him for indecent
exposure. Both Rogers and his lawyer, Norman Kent, deny the charge.
Kent says Rogers was at the Gayety Burlesque Theater, 2004 Collins
Ave., watching the movie, an untitled work. Admission is $10. "He
denies that his pants were unzipped, that his penis was exposed, that
he was masturbating," said Kent. "There is nothing illegal about being
in the theater watching a film," the lawyer said. The acerbic Rogers,
a top-rated radio personality for 16 years, was absent Thursday from
his normal midday show on station WIOD (610 AM). But the arrest, so
similar to actor Pee-Wee Herman's last year, lit up the airwaves.
Rogers' enemies crowed. "Neil is getting a dose of his own medicine,"
said one Miami caller to WIOD. Others were more brutal. "He's got
psychological problems. This is just another manifestation of them,"
said Hallandale Mayor Arthur "Sonny" Rosenberg, a frequent target of
Rogers. Rogers, home Thursday to rest after being spending the night
in the Dade County Jail, vowed to be back at his microphone today at
10:05 a.m. "I'll be back tomorrow and the day after that and the day
after that," said the man who has become a household name via his
abrasive radio persona, a self-described short, fat, balding, liberal,
Jewish, atheistic homosexual. Rogers was backed by his boss, WIOD Vice
President Michael Disney, who said he had no plans to suspend or fire
the star, who regularly registers top ratings. "We stand behind Neil.
He denies the charge. We believe Neil," said Disney. Miami Beach
police say Rogers' arrest was routine, that officers patrol the area
around Collins and 21st Street in order to prevent crimes against
homosexuals who frequent nearby theaters and hotels. "It is a problem
area for us," said police spokesman. "It is a target area for people
who want to bash homosexuals." In their police report, patrol officers
say they saw Rogers pull his T-shirt over his genitals, zip up his
pants and leave the theater. They followed, stopping him outside on
the street to ask for identification. Rogers showed them his Florida
driver's license -- which bears his real name, Nelson Roger Behelfer
-- plus identification from his home in the Carriage Hills section of
Plantation. Told he was being charged with indecent exposure, the
police report states Rogers twice asked the officers, "Do you know who
I am?" When officers asked who he was, he replied: "I'm Neil Rogers."
Taken to jail, he was released on $500 bond at 4 a.m. Lawyer Kent
questioned why officers failed to arrest Rogers inside the 300-seat
theater instead of following him outside and stopping him on Collins
Avenue. Arrest should have been immediate, said Kent. "Their story
lacks credibility. It suggests the police report may not be accurate,"
said Kent. Leroy Griffith, owner of the Gayety, said police are
constantly walking into his theater rather than patrolling streets.
Griffith also owns the Roxy, another Beach adult theater, plus the
Pussycat Theater in Miami and the Hollywood Twin Theater. In February
1989, Rogers charged that Hollywood police were attempting "to set me
up and create a case against me" by staking out the Hollywood theater.
No charges were ever filed. If convicted of indecent exposure, Rogers
could face up to a year in prison and a maximum fine of $1,000.

Get your fucking facts straight. Neil was on long before Howard was.

And, the charges were dropped. Why wasn't Neil arrested in theatre? Plus,
did you realize that the two cops who arrested Neil are known homophobes
who have a long list of disciplinary actions taken against them? I
believe they are no longer on the force.

Wanna-be? Neil was calling for Howard to be on here for years....

You must be a Steve Kane fan, asshole....

Are they the same officers who arrested Pee-Wee Herman? Wasn't he arrested
in Miami?
