The GOP Celebrity Gambit
http://educationalwhisper.blogspot.com/2008/09/vetting-of-sarah-palin-gop-celebrity.html
If the vetting of Sarah Palin is an indication of how good the McSame
administration will be going forward, there is large room for
improvement and plenty of evidence as to why we should not trust them
to do the job.

I guess that if they want to use a song that the writers will let them use
they are restricted to C&W. Since she lives in a state where trucks are the
primary mode of transportation and her daughter is pregnant it fits anyhow.

It continued: "We have asked the Republican campaign publicly
not to use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored.

Yet "Barracuda" blared again at the Republican National
Convention Thursday night after McCain's acceptance speech.

They "hope" their wishes will be honored? It's quite likely that the
group has no legal control over the use of their music.

One problem is that so many of the people who are in pop music are
Democrat supporters. As I said before, the lead guitarist was on
the radio playing the guitar part of the song and saying that while
he supports Obama, he doesn't have a problem with the other side
using the song.

You're denigrating Country music. I'm doubting very much that folks
like Steve Earle and Allison Kraus are voting for McCain. More like
Randy Travis and Toby Keith.

UPDATE Friday morning: here's a statement by Ann and Nancy Wilson from
EW.com:

"Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American
women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote
her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a
scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music
business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the
business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of
their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice
to make use of it there." Ann and Nancy Wilson

Ann and Nancy fired off a cease and desist letter to the McCain/Palin
campaign, complaining that their permission to use the song wasn't
requested - or granted.

Last night at the conclusion of the GOP convention, the Sen. John
McCain’s (R-AZ) campaign blasted the song “Barracuda” by Heart. The
tune is meant to be a theme song for Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK), whose
high school nickname was reportedly “Sarah Barracuda.” Watch a clip of
Republicans rocking out to the song:

The problem is that the McCain campaign never obtained legal
permission to use the song. Heart’s representative issued a statement:

The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the
song, nor would they have been granted that permission. We have asked

the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music. We hope our
wishes will be honored.

Here's a list of Heart's
Members and former members
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_(band)#Members_and_former_members
Controversy
In 1977 Heart's record label, Mushroom Records, fueled rumors that Ann
and Nancy were lesbian lovers by running a full-page ad in Rolling
Stone showing the sisters bare-shouldered and suggestively captioned,
"It was only our first time". When a reporter suggested, backstage
after a live appearance, that the sisters were sex partners, Ann
returned to her hotel room and wrote the lyrics to "Barracuda" to
relieve her frustration.[4] The song became one of Heart's biggest
hits (#11, 1977).

The owners of the rights to the song "Barracuda" are the ones that
count. Others can have opinions. Ann and Nancy Wilson "asked the
Republican campaign publicly not to use our music". Their ["our"]
music, not nameless.

The problem is that the McCain campaign never obtained legal

permission to use the song. Heart’s representative issued a statement.

Why take it that I meant you lied? Your nameless guitarist could have
been a fake or the liar. Or so what if an ex-employee said that? You
might just be a sucker. I don't know... you don't even care enough to
find the guitarists name. Had you said you were listening to "STATION
ID" & "DJ NAME" when a Hearts lead guitarist said whatever, that would
give you some credibility. [That has zero to do with the rights to the
song, copyright law] The most specific you managed was "radio playing
the guitar part of the song and saying." I'm not against moonbeams,
but there's a time and place.

While this is one tiny matter, it says alot about who you are, your
abilities or lack. I find it hard to believe you are as stupid as you
act, more like a L'il Jak technique and the way you all lose any
credibility at all. Your purpose now is to represent shooting

They had him play the song. So if he's faking it, he's pretty good.
I missed part of the interview so I didn't hear everything but he
clearly said that he didn't mind them using the song although he
was an Obama supporter. That's what I reported here.

The lead guitarist from Heart. I don't know what his name is. I
could look it up, I'm sure that Wiki has that. I suspect it was

Do you have an access to the recording of the station at that time?
It was an AM talk/news station.

Good grief. All I said was that I'd heard the guitarist from Heart
say that he didn't mind them using the song even though he is an
Obama supporter. If anyone lacks credibility, it's you.

Reuters reports that copyright law "may not be on the Wilsons' side as the
song is licensed for public performance under a blanket fee paid by the
venue to ASCAP, the firm that collects royalties on behalf of composers and
copyright owners."

http://www.reuters.com/article/entertainmentNews/idUSN0451966120080905?sp=true

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/09/no-heart-for-sa.html

Also according to Reuters, Roger Fisher, one of the song's co-writers and a
former guitarist for the group, had no problem with the GOP's use of the
tune. He termed it a "win-win" situation, saying Heart gets publicity and
royalties, while Republicans benefit from "the ingenious placement of a
kick-ass song."

http://www.reuters.com/article/entertainmentNews/idUSN0451966120080905?sp=true

Despite the Wilson sisters' objections, one of the song's co-writers said he
was "thrilled" that the song was used.

In an e-mail to Reuters, the band's former guitarist, Roger Fisher, said it
was a win-win situation. Heart gets publicity and royalties, while the
Republicans benefit from "the ingenious placement of a kick-ass song,"
Fisher said.

I think that that's generally the case. Bush Sr was attacked for
using Don't Worry, Be Happy, I think by the song writer. Many of
these artists are Liberals or at least Democrats, so they often act
like it's a terrible thing that their works, which they happily
make money off of otherwise, are used by politicians.

And I was reporting that because I'd heard it live on the radio as
he called in. He said that he was going to try to get his voice
heard, I guess he has. One of the benefits of usenet (and other
very interactive communication on the internet) is that information
is made available before it can get through the other more
traditional media. If this is squelched by someone claiming that
someone who is just repeating what he heard and says such is
"lying", that's hardly helpful.

So if I hear from ? that Sarah Palin has sex with "Roosskies" on polar

Your comment didn't appear to be obvious satire or have substance.
In regard to copy right laws, it appeared a distraction.
