Hello All,
Just contemplating combining audio from two sources into a
stereo headset. The sources would be a handheld scanner and a small
AM/FM Walkman. I presume some sort of mixer......? It would have to be
portable and light. Intended use would be for monitoring aircraft
frequencies while mowing a full size airstrip, and yet being able to
listen to music to aleviate the boredom. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, that would require a 2-channel mixer. But good luck getting one that is readily portable.

Since both of them have independent volume controls, you can just try a
passive mixer.
I was going to suggest just combining the two inputs with resistors on each,
but then I realized that you can get that resistance off of each of their
volume controls.

So, I suggest you just combine their inputs and grounds. Tweak the volume
controls on both until you are happy...

How big are those? Or do you mean a dual-male branched 1/8" stereo cord to female 1/8" connector?
That may work.

Why not split the stereo input and put the scanner in one ear and the
AM/FM in the other...

``an expandable headphone mixer'' will allow the simultaneous monitoing of up to three rigs. The circuit is in ARRL Handbook 1998 section 22.31 . The main component is a lm386 as a mixer with tone controls and it operates from battery. I would try using a tl074 myself, but the circuit looks good.

The mixer was built by Mark Wilson, AA2Z at the ARRL labs. You can probably get the circuit from the ARRL.

I don't think so. The way you're explaining it, if you had a spare 3.5mm jack, you could splice it onto on of the sides you want to listen to that device on. So one headset, 2 jacks. You could easily run one side to a jack, and vice versa. Then just plug into the 2 devices, and adjust the audio.

You said walkman in one ear, and the other in the other ear, right?

Yeah, just do that.

sorry, I just read it again. Yes, if you wanted both in both ears, although the splicing I mentioned would give mixed results, ideally you're gonna want a mixer, but try the splice first.
