Hi, I'm thinking of getting into scanning and I was curious as to what scanner
would be a good one to start off with. I don't want to spend alot of $$$, but
I know whatever I get should have a search feature. In particular, what Radio
Shack brand would work best? Also, is there any way to hook up a scanner to a
cassette deck and record things off the scanner?

Any advice would be appreciated.
thanks,
Josh

Most scanners have a Search feature of one type or another. The search is
either
manually input ie 31.00 to 32.00 or the scanner will have you push a button
ie FIRE
POLICE etc to find used frequencies. Depending on your location and what
you want to listen to price will vary... If you just want Police, Fire,
etc.. Then a 100 or 200 Channel Scanner with 800Mhz coverage would do..
These are usually priced
at 150-300 New... If you want Military Aircraft etc you will pay more..
Also you have
to decide if you want a Hand Held or Base scanner.. On the question of
recording
all I can say is you want a Voice Activated cassette recorder.
.
What scanner to start with I would say a Bearcat or Radio Shack scanner.
If you
want info on some Bearcat Scanners try http://www.scannerworld.com/
they have listings of features and prices..

First, decide on what you want to listen to most. You can then narrow your choices to radios that cover
those freq. ranges. 2. Where are you going to listen, home, car, "on site" ? If you go to a lot of airshows
or auto races etc, you'll wish you had a handheld. 3. Don't rush in to it! I was highly dissappointed after
buying a scanner that a retail clerk said "covers everything", only to find out it did not cover "military UHF",
(the main thing I wanted to listen to was mil. aircraft!)
I currently use a BC-200 xlt handheld and a BC-890 xlt base/mobile (both under $300.00)
I now hear more "fights on" , "bogies at..." and , "fox two" calls than I can count!

TM-
