I am an Icom enthusiast (I own a dozen of ICOMs between receivers,
tranceivers, amplifiers, etc) but I recommend you the AOR AR5000 +3 with
mechanical filters because it receives much better than Icom IC8500 in
LF, HF, VHF & UHF.
And has a lot of better tech. specification as : frequency coverage, memory
management, scanning facilities, frequency stability, choices of
selectivity, tuning steps, number of VFOs, BFO offset, DTMF & CTCSS, and
many others important and useful caracteristics.

I have not any doubt: AOR is much better.

I would rate them both 8.5 out of 10. The 8500 is a pleasure to use, whereas
the 5000's menu system is a bit of a pain in the arse. However, the
performance of the 5000 is superior to that of the 8500, at least on HF. On
VHF, UHF & SHF, it's much of a muchness, with the 8500 being marginally
better in the selectivity department. Oh, and by the way, the 8500
DEFINITELY needs the High Stability Xtal Oscillator, otherwise it does tend
to drift a bit.
Hope this has been helpful.

Mine certainly isn't. Admittedly, my 5000+3 has Collins filters <g>, but
even before I fitted them, it still outperformed my 8500, to which I added
the High Stab Xtal in order to improve it's performance on HF. It did, but I
can still resolve TDM signals on the 5000 better than on the 8500. But
either of them pale into insignificance when compared to the NRD-545. What a
receiver. It's even better than my Ten Tec RX-340, which must be the only
receiver ever sold where the cabinet it comes in is a US$200 accessory! I
couldn't believe it. By the way, anyone interested in the RX-340? As new, in
box with all manuals (and case). Current price is US$4150. Make a reasonable
offer & it's yours. I'll even stand the UPS delivery charge, but don't
overload my server in your haste to outbid each other. I can only handle
about 1500 calls per hour LOL.
