The police use callsigns in other places. "No Waiting" cones often will
have the callsign of the town written on them - to stop other towns
nicking them! Any equipment in a police vehicle, like torches, signs
etc, will have the vehicle's callsign written on it - again to stop
other people nicking it! So just keep your eyes open and you can pick
up a lot of information.

I think Paul is referring to the "Police & Constabulary Almanac" which is
published annually in February by R Hazell & Co at about £27. You can get it
from Amazon or any bookstore which takes orders but as Paul says, you may be
lucky enough to find an up-to-date copy in the reference section your library.
Some forces are a bit stingy on the info they allow to be published but others
give almost complete callsign schemes for many of their divisions and/or fixed
locations and where they don't there's often enough detail and structure there
to make a good stab at working it out for yourself.
Cheers

even looking at police websites can be a help sometimes
ie on the Met site there was also a list of police stations amd opening
times etc, with each one the letter callsign was there.
