Hi,

Apologies if this is the wrong place to be asking -

I'm new to scanning & have picked up a "cheapo" Motorola GP300.

I have been thinking about building an interface for my (GP300) Radio
to convert it to a ham band scanner - the interface is shown here
http://www.qsl.net/eb4eqa/gp300_rib/gp300_rib.htm -

I can easily replace components on existing PCB's but building from
scratch is beyond me. Are there people around on this NG who would
build this sort of thing & if so, how much are we looking at?

Regards

Nik (Remove the OBVIOUS from my email address to reply)

Hi Nik,
strangely enough I've just spent the last hour or so programming
a GP300 onto 70cm! The question I would ask is do you want to be able to
scan a band of frequencies or just a few preset channels? The GP300 can
be set to scan its pre-programmed channels but not to scan between two
limits, as a more conventional scanner can.

As far as the interface goes it is not too critical as to
positioning of components so it would go quite happily onto vero board.
Secondly they do appear quite often on Ebay and if you do a Google
search you will find them on sale too.

Check that you can get the software before you go too far down
the line, there are two types of legit Motorola software, these are for
normal basic sets and also for 5 tone selcall sets. One will not program
the other. On top of this there are also various dodgy hacked versions
that allow a few other things to be done too. From the legal stand point
you can only legally buy Motorola software from Motorola and they take a
dim view of it being hacked and passed around!

Best of luck and enjoy the GP they are a nice robust set.

Just want the preset channels. The software is on an old laptop which
was "thrown out" by the local Motorola Dealer who forgot to wipe it
off. I figure that I'll probably just throw it myself after I have
done this. I'm not into the illegal side of anything, just getting my
GP programmed, would be a shame to just bin it.

Cheers for the reply ;) Keep up the good work, I enjoy reading this
NG.
