dep[ends what parameters one is looking at

depsite its age and lack of pc connectivity, alpha tagging etc,the 7100 is
still the most sensitive scanner on the market.

and at now £200 app then represents very good all round scanning value, but
the AOR8200 is a fanatastic higher priced scanner with more functions and pc
connectivity etc,they are differant completely.

for general scanning then a 7100 is fanatastic, but if you go out and about
across UK alpha tagging and pc files for areas or type of monitoring are
invaluable.

then there are others that fit the bill like the Alinco DJ-X2000 with built
in freq counter/flash tune.

or the new ICOM R20

Ok thanks. Any good on HF I wonder for data sigs also ? Is it sensitive on
2.4ghz for video senders etc ?

Depends entirely what you're looking for. The MVT 7100 still has the best
sensitivity and selectivity of any handheld scanner ive ever seen. In terms
of RF performance the yupi wins hands down.

The 8200 however has computer control, alpha tagging, dynamic size memories
and other features but is poorer RF side.

You need to decide yourself what you value most.

Is it ? I thought the 8200 was an improvement in RF over the 7100 ?

From my experience with the 2 side by side and on the same antennas,
definately not.

Via a splitter on the same external antenna a lot of AR8200 freqs need the
antennuator on wheres the 7100 is fine with no breakthrough.

My local airport ATIS is S0 but good readable with this antenna on 7100 but
unreadable due to bleedover with the 8200

I have found many other examples, selectivity wise the yupi wins hands down
with external antennas.

MW is far better though on the 8200, just one big noise on the 7100 so
obviously a front end exists though the supplied MW 'plug in' antenna is
next to useless. I feel 80m / 40m is better to on the 8200

Cant say i really listen to MW at all on it. For the HF bands i use a
dedicated HF receiver.

The 7100 hasnt got a specific ferrite antenna for MW whereas the 8200 has
but i get the impression the 7100 front end is far better preselected and
matched towards VHF than the 8200 seems to be (despite the claims to the
contrary by AOR). Suppose it depends what you want to listen to but for
v/uhf if i wanted RF performance and nothing else id use a 7100, if i want
alpha tags, PC control etc its the 8200 with the known sacrifice of weaker
signals being lost.

If Yupiteru stuck PC control on one of the 9000 series scanners theyd have a
world beater, i cant understand why they never did it. The bottom is
beginning to fall out of the UK scanner market now with the arrival of tetra
along with mainland europe beginning to adopt it too so i suspect the days
of very highly featured scanners are nearing an end at least over here.
