Tim,

I had one of these scanners, many years ago. If you've found one in
good condition then they are a good solid scanner, albeit they have
limitations.

I answered a similar question as yours quite a while ago, so perhaps
if you search in deeja or something similar you should find most of
the instruction to both search and scan.

If you can't find it or still need help then get back to me and I will
try and get you started. Basically its quite a simple scanner to
operate, and covers most bands except MilAIR.

regards

Nigel

Thank You for all your help so far, im still stumped though, my sx is in
mint condition and in original box, but no instructions, one of u said that
it has 32 chanels, although i can only access 16??, the receive is exellant
and out performs my radio shack 2045 on most bands, not bad for something
more that 20 years old, ive popped the lid off and the circuit is unmodified
and apears to have never been touched or repaired, how can i access more of
the storage banks?, and to set the clock would be a real advantage as unless
i switch it on at midnight its always wrong, as im on a keymeter my power
sometimes go's off and its not practicle to keep waiting up till midnight
just to set the clock, on the back is four aditional switches as follows,

Scan con
123

(three posistion selector switch seems to do nothing?)

Sq Con

123

(three position seems to do nothing much)

clock

12

(2 position presume to set clock?, in position 2 displays clock on screen
when scanner switched off, in 1 only displays clock when not in scan mode)

Dim

12

(2 position, and this ones obvious as its a floresent tube display so high
and low brightness)

my challenge to you scanner heads is a;) how to set the clock b;)
modifications for more channels open closed frequencys, at the moment it
go's from 26 Mhz to 512 Mhz but im guessing it can do more as many of the
older ones can be opened up for continuous or additional channels can be
added higher than 512???

c;) a copy of an instruction booklet would solve it all.

Hopefully

I used to have an SX200...a smashing scanner for its time and VERY
robust. It only has 16 channels and I don't think it was capable of
being expanded. I also know that Garex Electronics maintained that it
was not possible to make the SX200 go out of band (there were gaps in
the coverage if I remember rightly) and I don't think they were ever
proved wrong. Sorry I can't remember how to set the clock...and yes its
a real nuisance that when the power is disconnected the clock doesn't
maintain the time!

At the time of its release it was the only scanner that could be set to
AM mode (early Realistic scanners from Tandy were FM only, whereas a
number of UK radio schemes were AM [and still are!]) It could not scan a
mixture of AM and FM channels though there was a modification published
in Peter Rouses 'Scanners 2' book several years ago that gave details of
a passable mod to get around this.(Can't remember details now..)

The Japanese instruction book that came with it was complete crap, so
Garex at the time did their own manual which was brilliant and would
answer all your questions though I don't know where you'd get one
now.Garex moved from Tring to Devon several years ago and I'm not sure
if they're still around, though they were a bloody good firm...early
pioneers of the scanner trade.

Regarding the back switches, I know that one controlled a scanner
squelch system (supposed to skip continuous tones etc...can't remember
which switch it was though. And it didn't work anyway.

My guess is that with a lot of fiddling you'll work it all out yourself.
There is little damage you can do to it. But I am failry sure there is
no way to unlock 'extra banks' (there was just 1 set of 16 channels) or
to improve frequency coverage. There was a way to trick the display to
display out of band freqs, but this was just a display trick(can't
remember how it was done) and it didn't mean the scanner was actually
tuned to that freq.

Probably not much use to you...but the best I can do.

OK Tim, here you have it.

I'm glad you agree that the SX-200 is a good scanner. Its not much by
todays standards, but nevertheless, its robust and quite sensitive and
along with its bigger brother. The JIL SX-200 & SX-400 were used
intensively by many professional organisations, including BT.

I will try and cover the most important and salient points of getting
to know the scanner.

The AM -FM Button - speaks for itself.

The SX-200 will operate on a 12 volt supply as well as mains, so it
can accompany you in the car, though you will need a large mounting
bracket!

Frequency Range: There are four bands.

26MHz - 57.995MHz in 5kHz steps
58MHz - 88.00MHZ in 12.5kHz steps
108MHz - 180.000MHz in 5kHz steps
380MHz - 514.000MHz in 12,5kHz steps

The receiver will automatically change the frequency stepping space to
suit each band.

Memory channel: This facility permits you to store away into the
memory bank within the receiver from 1 to 16 different frequencies of
your choice. The scanner only has 16 memories.

Scan delay Time; A three position scan delay switch on the rear of
the receiver panel permits you to select a specific time lapse for the
completion of a transmission before scanning resumes.

Seeking & Searching mean the same thing. You are searching once you
press the up or down buttons.

Entry Button <ENT> This button must be pressed within 5 seconds of
your completing a frequency selection for that frequency to be
retained. If you dither after displaying the chosen frequency and 5
seconds elapse, your selected frequency is lost and subsequently
disappears from the display and is replaced by the 'time' readout.

Whilst in scan or seek mode the squelch slider control must be to the
left and just cutting the noise. Immediately a signal is detected,
scanning or seeking stops on frequency and if you wish to remain on
that frequency, you either press the stop (.ST) button or move the
squelch slider to the right, thus permitting the noise between
transmissions to hold you on channel.

SETTING UP OF THE RECEIVER

Before you procede to put the scanner into operation, check the
following:

Rear Panel:

1, Dimmer Control Switch to ON
2. Scan delay Control to POSITION 1
3. Clock Switch to OFF
4. Squelch Switch to Position 1
5. LO/DW Switch to 'DX' Position
6. Antenna Connected
7. Power Supply Connected and Switched ON

Front Panel

1. Volume Control 1/3 of full travel from left
2, Squelch Slider Control: - Midway or to LEFT
3. Fine Tune Control - CENTRE

After Switch-On, time is displayed - A00.00, so adjust this readout
to the correct time.

PRESS C.K Button ONCE
PRESS AND HOLD (MW-II) Button until the hour approached your local
time period A=AM P=PM and release. Now step up to the required hour
with a single press action to (MW-II) Button.

Having the correct hour displayed
PRESS C.K. Button ONCE
Press & HOLD (SW-M) Button. Now step-up to the required minute with
single press action (SW-M)

With the display showing time, PRESS FREQUENCY DISPLAY Button (FR)
once and irrespective of what happens to the display, cast your eyes
over the left hand keyboard and make a mental note - the ENTRY Button
(ENT) is located bottom centre of the key board. You MUST PRESS THIS
BUTTON WITHIN 5 SECONDS of completing the following operation.

Using the button on the Left Hand Keyboard.

PRESS - 514-ENT-LIM-26-ENT

After 5 seconds have elapsed the time will be displayed. You have now
programmed the receiver to its full potential in relation to the
specified band parameter coverage.

SCAN WRITE & MEMORY WRITE

Each button has a suffix (M for Minute) and (H for Hour)
Buttons relating to clock adjustment include CK Button, bear in mind
other buttons also perform more than one function.

MEMORY WRITE BUTTON

This will write or store a chosen frequency into one of the 16 memory
banks.

PRESS Stop (.ST) button - ONCE
PRESS Entry (ENT) Button - ONCE
PRESS Memory Write (MW-H) Button - ONCE
PRESS memory Channel Button of your choice - ONCE (ie M1 toM16)

For further entries into the bans, select your next frequency and
repeat the above procedure.

SCAN WRITE

The Scan Write Button when pressed once, gives you access to the
memory bank for selection of specific priority frequencies (among
those previously stored) to be scanned. To program this facility you
must:

PRESS Stop (>ST) Button - TWICE
PRESS Scan Write (SW-M) Button - ONCE
PRESS Memory Bank Buttons (your selection) in any order of preference)
Confirm squelch Slider to the LEFT - just cutting noise.
PRESS Scan 'B' Button - ONCE

Take Careful Note: Stop button always pressed TWICE before pressing
SW-M.

Dimmer Control Switch. Moving this switch from one side to the other
dims or brightens the display. Central position will turn the display
off and has no detrimental affect on receiver operation or timing.

CLOCK SWITCH

Normally left in 'OFF' position. If you wish to use the receiver as a
digital clock between listening, leave the rear panel clock switch in
the 'ON' position, unlatch the front panel switch (turning off
receiver) and leave mains supply on. With clock switch in OFF
position, time is still display with receiver operating, but is
extinguished when front panel power button is toggled (unlatched) to
OFF.

I'm sure this is all the information you will ever need Tim, this will
most certainly get you started and up and running. Its not a
difficult scanner to operate and you should easily be able to
familiarise yourself on these instruction.

Finally, do use a good antenna and good clean connections.

I hope you get many hours of pleasure from this scanner

Good Luck

Nigel

The Manufacture is JIL - REVCO formerly Garex used to sell and market
them.

I also owned an SX-400 and still have a set of Instructions - If you
would like any further info, drop me a line and i will try and send
you the details or answers.

Again another good scanner, it certainly was in its time! I know
there are still a few of these about, and they can be converted to go
up to 2 Gigs.

The SX-400 operates from 26MHz to 520MHz with no gaps. (I believe) it
was the first scanner on the market in this country to give full
coverage on MilAir Band.

Its a solidly built job though.

FANTASTIC, WHAT A REALY HELPFUL BUNCH YOU ARE, I REALY DIDN@T THINK THAT WE
WOULD GET THE ANSWER TO MY PROBLEM BUT WE DID IT, WELL THANKS GO's TO NIGEL
WHO FOUND THE ANSWERS AND TO ALL THE REST OF YOU WHO TRIED THERE BEST.

If anyone does find any mods that are possible please let me know, oh and
while im on here i also own a Realistic 2045, its always been a good radio,
but can it do anything else???, Ie- be opened up or modded to receive any
band lower than 66 Mhz??.

Who knows of a scanner that will cover the really low bands, as low as 1.2
Mhz???? anyone who knows whats on and around this frequency will know what
i listen too, and why I bought the JiL in the first place, (26-30 Mhz band)
mmmmm think about it and im sure your get it, i have the peter rouse
scanners 2 book, where in it is mod details on the JiL?, Thanks Team your
the best.

One last thing anyone who has any old cb equipment please let me know by
e-mail, i am a collector of cb radio's mostly uk sets but american ones are
welcome too, i currently have over 50 sets covering a lot of the early am
and legal uk fm models, im not worried if they work or not as long as there
mostly complete, i will buy imcomplete sets for spares or to rebuild but
don't pay a great deal for these, well thats it.

Thanks Again
