I'd appreciate it if someone could help me out here. I'm gonna be
buying a scanner soon. (I used to own a Pro 37) I've decided on the
AOR 2700 or a second hand AOR 8000 or Yupiteru 7100/7200 depending on
how the 2700 measures up.
All info very much appreciated!
Cheers

I have been told that it is not `CE` approved and therefore cannot be
legally sold in the UK unless it is
second hand.
Anybody else have any thoughts on this.

I bought an ar2700 about a year ago for the full price (£299 I think)
and I haven't been very impressed with it at all, it chucks out all
sorts of spurious signals and the audio quality is not of a great
standard. My first Tandy Realistic scanner also manages to pick up
more than the 2700 so I wouldn't bother.
I'm now in the market for something else if anyone has any
suggestions.
BTW on page 62 of Novembers Short Wave Magazine there is an advert
from a company called Amateur Radio Communications, they are selling
AR2700's at a drastically reduced price. The reason being:
"Due to end of production run"
Is this the end for the AR2700? lets hope so.

Almost right craig.
I believe the rule is they cannot be imported after 1st jan 1996
without CE approval.
Having owned a 2700 (admittedly only for 2 1/2 weeks).
Price and features brilliant, I particularly liked the electronic
on/off with sleep timer.
Unfortunately I found reception to be crap !
The SAT (Supervisory Audio Tone) on the cellular band is audible
and I found airband to be dead.
Also the audio output was very sharp (by that I mean when using an
earpiece it bloody hurt !)
I exchanged it for an AR8000.
Brilliant piece of kit but again the reception is not what you would
expect after all the hype.
I would seriously look at Yupi 7100 if you arent bothered about all
the frills. I have never used a Yupi but the majority of posters seem
to think its better that the AR8000
Comments please gents !

Me too! ;-) I paid 230 for mine and it's the worst scanner I have ever
owned. I`ve had a number of different scanners over the past 7 years and
probably the best one I owned was a Uniden. Therefore I will be
returning to one in the near future. I quite fancy the UBC-9000XLT base.

Would you like to buy mine as well? You could breed them :-)

Yeah I saw the advert you mentioned. AOR are ending production of the
2700. I called Haydon Communications and was told that the 2700 was
being sold cheaply purely for the fact that it Is'nt economical to gain
the CE approval for the type.
Anyway, I've decided that it's worth waiting a month and having enough
spare cash to go ahead and purchase the Yupiteru 7100. I've browsed the
web and found that all reviews of the scanner have shown it to be an
excellent all round alternative to the AOR 8000. OK you don't get all
the gadgets, but I can live with that.
I gotta say I'm glad I didn't go ahead and buy the 2700. All thank's
to simon JD who mailed me about the hassle he's had with the 2700.
Thanks Simon!
BTW I'd be very interested to hear anyone who has experience with the
MVT 7100.
Cheers

I have both a AR8000 and the older Yupiteru MVT5000 and Ive found the
Yupiteru to be the more sensitive receiver, sometimes hearing signals
that the AR8000 cant hear.
The trouble is being very sensitive and having no attenuator the MVT5000
wouldnt really work with an external aerial (one of the reasons I got the
AR8000).
Strangely Ive noticed when placed next to each other and both are set onto
the same frequency, the Yupiteru audio seems to come through about 1 sec
before the AR8000s?

Now that seriously surprises me !
I am fortunate enough to have an entire RF development facility
available to me.
Since it first came out I have owned a Yupi 5000.
The best sensitivity on the box was -118 dbm (12db S/N) front end
response was pretty flat 25-1300 - a good set .
lacking in RX audio level "in-car" but still a superb set.
I foolishly traded this in for an AOR 1500 (The full range one).
That had a front end like a roller coaster !
best = -117 dBm / 12 @47 Mhz average -111 dBm /12 (D E A F ! ! ! )
I "borrowed" a Yupi 7100 when they came out. - great ! again -117 to
-120 dbm /12 flat
25-1300 MHZ.
but I was told about the '8000 which was coming out & decided to wait.
when it came out , I waited a month or so then "borrowed" an 8000.
this was SUPERB ! FLAT ! -123 dbm/12 S/N from 44Mhz to 1.8Ghz
WORST MEASUREMENT -96 /12 (BUT AT RX FREQ OF 400 KHZ !!!)
so I bought one ! just the same ! superb ! It's 2 years old now, I'll
just lob it
on the analyser again to compare....(pause)...back again, still superb
-122 dbm/12
after a life around QRO radio sites too.
my only gripe about the 8000 is "the sweepers" - oscillator harmonics
around the 400 Mhz
mark that change frequency as the nicads reach around 1/2 discharge
cycle and they
*always* appear on "interesting" memorised freq's !!!!!
I still contend that although the 7100 is an excellent set, my 8000
beats it on performance.
in the lab every time.
