Fred dropped dead as he was returning from an evening constitutional on 17
Mar 56. He'd had problems with high blood pressure and heart disease for
many years, but seemed (to those who observed him personally, at least,
during this period; on TV, he appears quite frail) to be in better health
and better spirits as he moved into semi-retirement following the conclusion
of "The Big Show". But, yes, "shocking" seemed to be the consensus of those
interviewed for the Allen "Biography In Sound" (29 May 56) and his "What's
My Line?" panelmates on the show aired the day following his passing.

Fred was a great friend to nearly the entire NYC-based
acting/writing/performing community -- those who could appreciate the
acerbic wit of an Allen, at least, as he was often reported to be even more
cutting in private than he permitted himself to be for broadcast -- and it
would seem Mason was counted among these. Even upon the opportunity provided
by Portland's passing earlier this year, however, there seems to be have
been little or no elaboration on this matter (save to point out the
derivation of her name) in the press.
