Today is a birthday, I wonder for whom
We know it's for someone who's right in this room
So look all around you for somebody who
Is smiling and happy, my goodness it's you!
The theory is that this song came from an old radio show. Any idea how I
might track down the origins of this song?
Thanks!
Chris
Big Jon and Sparkie, was the name of the weekday edition of the show, 15
to 30 min. ran from 1950-1954, . The Saturday show was titled "No School
Today" 90 to 120 min, it ran from 1950-1958. Jon Arthur continued to
broadcast the show over shortwave, after the end of the network show.
"No School Today" and "Space Patrol" filled every Saturday morning for
me.
I did a google search, and found examples of the birthday song, but no
sources listed. You might try the 24/7 librarian internet service, a
live chat with a librarian who has many other resources which are not
found on the internet yet. The URL is:
Looks like it's from the Big Jon & Sparkie Show.
Putting the first line you gave in quotes along with the word "lyrics"
into a google search gave this webpage:

with this letter:

show
We have sung and this birthday song to our loved ones since the
1950's. The words I recall from my boyhood differ slightly and I
believe are a little more endearing:
Today is a birthday, I wonder for whom?
I know it's for someone who's right in this room
So look all around you for somebody who,
is smiling, and happy
My Goodness, it's YOU!
Happy Birthday, -----
From all of us to you
Happy Birthday, -----
From Mommy and Daddy too
We congratulate you, and pray good luck follows you.
Happy Birthday, -----, May all of your good dreams come true.
