1. THE CURRENT:
It’s been 25 years since news reports of starving, emaciated Ethiopian
children captured the world's attention…and led to an out-pouring of
support for relief efforts. This fall, Ethiopia is once-again relying
on food aid. And some activists say that the international help is
actually hurting the country in the long-run. Today on The Current,
host Hana Gartner talks to an Ethiopian woman who was just three-years-
old when the 1984 famine hit…but managed to survive it. Also on the
program, an interview with a development activist who’s re-thinking
the long-term effects of food aid.

Today on Q…actress Valerie Bertinelli joins host Jian Ghomeshi live in
studio. She’s the former star of One Day At A Time and ex-wife of
rock star Eddie Van Halen. And last year, she returned to the public
eye as spokeswoman for the weight-loss company Jenny Craig.
Bertinelli wrote about that experience in a memoir called Losing It -
a New York Times #1 bestseller, no less. Now, she's back with a new
memoir called Finding It. It’s about discovering the inner journey to
a more fulfilled life…and it tackles tough questions like: "If God is
loving, why does he tempt me with macaroons all the time?"
Valerie Bertinelli reveals how she’s feeding a more spiritual hunger.

3. LIVING OUT LOUD:
This week, Living Out Loud proves why Halloween is no laughing
matter. Host Robin Brown discovers ghoulish tales from around the

Spring Island. She’ll also hear about a Mexican tradition where
families create altars full of candles and flowers to summon the souls
of dead relatives.

Canadian chanteuse Diana Krall’s 2001 release The Look of Love gave

Nights… through songs infused with the sonic glow of a symphony
orchestra.
This afternoon, Canada Live meets up with Krall on latest tour at the
Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver. She’s joined on stage by her hard-
swinging quartet AND members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra…with
subtle arrangements by Claus Ogerman and Johnny Mandel.

5. IDEAS:
Tonight on IDEAS… part two of broadcaster Philip Coulter’s documentary
The Great Hunger. In this episode, Coulter travels to Ukraine to
uncover stories about that nation’s Holodomor – or murder by hunger -
of 1932 and 1933. He’ll meet with survivors to find out what happened
during - and after - the mass starvation in the former Soviet
Socialist Republic. He’ll also look at how the event rippled down
through history…and shaped the lives of later generations.
It’s the second – and final – installment of Philip Coulter’s The
Great Hunger…on IDEAS with host Paul Kennedy, tonight at 9:00 p.m.
