1. THE CURRENT:
As the United Nations World Summit on Food Security wraps up today
[Wednesday November 18] in Rome…The Current revisits an idea that some
say could alleviate malnutrition in developing countries. It’s called
golden rice - a genetically engineered grain that contains
carotenoids, which the human body converts into pro-Vitamin A.
Supporters say this fortified food could provide a cheap AND effective
way of preventing major health problems in some of the world’s poorest
nations. But critics believe golden rice is not actually very
effective and will just take funding away from REAL solutions. On
today’s program, host Anna Maria Tremonti talks to experts on BOTH
sides of the debate over this humanitarian tool.
A look at the hopes - and fears - behind golden rice in the fight
against global hunger…on The Current with host Anna Maria Tremonti,
today at 8:30 a.m. (9:00 NT) on CBC Radio One.

This week on The Story From Here…the 2008 Clint Eastwood movie The
Changeling told the tale of a California mother’s quest for justice
after the abduction and grisly murder of her son. But many people may
not know that the real-life story actually had its roots in
Saskatchewan. The psychopathic serial killer behind the crime was
Gordon Northcott – a Canadian who shamelessly used his teenage nephew
from Saskatoon as an accomplice. Sanford Clark was eventually saved
by friends and family, and went on to live a long and productive life
back in Canada. On today’s program, host Sheila Coles explores a
shocking and sympathetic new book about Clark’s experiences…as told by
his son Jerry.

the publication of Charles Darwin’s transformational and contentious
book, On the Origin of Species. In this installment of The Evolution
of Charles Darwin, contributor Seth Feldman looks at the British
naturalist’s rising star in science. A young Darwin not only believed
in evolution… but also knew how it worked better than anyone else.
Yet this family man, country squire and talented scientist kept his
thoughts secret for more than twenty years. As this evening’s program
reveals…the evidence piled up until the pressure was so great that
Darwin was compelled to publish his research.
It’s the second episode of Seth Feldman’s four-part tribute to Charles
Darwin on IDEAS with host Paul Kennedy… tonight at 9:00 p.m. (9:30 NT)
