A CELEBRATION OF UTRECHT'S PLACE IN HISTORY

From the 1996 Utrecht Early Music Festival a programme of music
celebrating that city's place in history. The music includes George
Frederick Handel's Te Deum and Jubilate, written to mark the signing of
the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 as well as William Boyce's The King Shall
Rejoice. The St. Paul's Cathedral Choir and Academy of Ancient Music
are conducted by Christopher Hogwood. A musical history lesson of
sorts, on Choral Concert with host Howard Dyck.

1998 at SYMPHONY HALL begins with a concert from the National Arts
Centre Orchestra and principal guest conductor, Franz-Paul Decker.

The guest artist for this concert is Chantal Juillet. She'll be playing
a number of works by French composers including Ernest Chausson's 'Poeme
in E Flat, Op.25'; a 'Romance' and a 'Berceuse' by Gabriel Faure and the
'Fantaisie-Ballet' by Edouard Lalo.

The orchestra will be featured playing Claude Debussy's 'Prelude to the
Afternoon of a Faun' and Max Reger's 'Variations and Fugue on a Cheerful
Theme'.

Joe Jackson whose career has spanned from pop to jazz to film scores.
His latest album Heaven & Hell was released by the Sony Classical label.
In our Craftworks series, we discover from Vancouver artist, filmmaker
and photographer Jayce Salloum how music influences his creative
process. And in our music feature, it's the always eclectic and
entertaining Jane Siberry. Her 29 minute soundscape titled A Day In The
Life takes us on a trip through New York with her.

In 1994 the British Broadcasting Corporation's Radio Drama department
held a series of writers workshops in New York, with a view to
commissioning short original plays from writers on this side of the big
pond. The eight works ultimately selected were all subsequently produced
in Toronto in a unique collaboration with CBC Radio Performance. The
first four "New Found Land" plays were broadcast in November, and Sunday
Showcase is proud to once again play host for the remaining dramas in
this ground-breaking co-production with the BBC.

Sunday, January 4 - Demonology by Kelly Stuart

De Martini is a powerful executive with a Los Angeles infant formula
manufacturer. Life shouldn't get much better than that - except someone
is sabotaging De Martini's accounts, and sending him E mails which are
so sexually provocative the poor exec can hardly think straight. De
Martini suspects Gina, his secretary - an avowed breast feeder and a
member of that notoriously militant feminist conspiracy, La Leche. But
then the haunting begins... Demonology was directed by Eoin O'Callaghan
and stars Michael McManus, Terri Hawkes, Nicholas Campbell, Catherine
Disher and Kevin Zegers.

This is the decade of the DJ and everything goes: new sounds, old soul,
deep bass and the higher groove. Tonight, your host DJ Guru Prasad
presents rare and unreleased recordings of 20th Century tabla master
Ustad Ahmed Jaan (John) Tharikwa (tear-ik-wa). Tharikwa paints the
universe with his fingers on the drum. Also tonight, a raw and
remix-less session of Punjabi bhangra (bung-ra) and folk music. It's
all about 'riddim.'

Dvorak's Cello Concerto in b minor, op.104 as performed by Mstislav
Rostropovich with the Berlin Philharmonic as conducted by Herbert von
Karajan. In concert, Martin Beaver (violin), Nicolo Eugelmi (viola) and
James Parker (piano).

Friday - In concert, the pianist Helene Grimaud joins National Arts
Centre Orchestra under the direction of Franz-Paul Decker for a
performance of works by Mozart and R. Strauss.

Monday - French horn virtuoso James Sommerville joins the European Union
Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Lavard Skou Larsen for a
concert from the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto.

Tuesday - From Vancouver, Ensemble Sonnerie with J.S. Bach's Musical
Offering (complete). Also, a profile of Erwin Schulhoff, a Czech
composer who had an eclectic career as a composer and pianist between
the two World Wars. He championed the music of Arnold Schoenberg and
Alban Berg on his own recitals, but the music he wrote himself was often
influenced by jazz and other cultural and social trends of the 1920s and
1930s. Prepared by Harold Gillis.

Wednesday - From Calgary, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Centre in
concert. Also, Finland is a small nation with a huge appetite for music.
Ken Murphy travels to the land of Sibelius for a look at how the Finns
make and keep music in their lives.

Thursday - From the Jack Singer Concert Hall, the Calgary Philharmonic
Orchestra under the direction of Hans Graf with Benjamin Schmid, violin,
and Jeremy Brown, saxophone. Also, Notes from the Edge, Part I, a look
at where improvisation and structure meet in music.

Captain Balstrode. David Atherton conducts the Metropolitan Opera
Orchestra and Chorus. Join host Peter Allan for this live broadcast
from the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.

Little Sister by Raymond Chandler (3 parts)

Starting this week, one of the Philip Marlowe classics about Hollywood
in 1947. A cute little 'number' from Kansas named Orfamay needs help to
find her brother but somehow it all gets overblown as Marlowe keeps
finding folk with ice-picks (remember them?) in their necks. There is
also a movie star named Mavis Weld who is searching for a missing photo
that ties her to a gangland figure who has turned up dead. And yeah, a
couple of cops hang around just to make trouble.

And there's barely a forensic pathologist in sight. Adapted for radio by
Bill Morrison, with Ed Bishop as Marlowe, Liza Ross as Orfamay, Margaret
Robertson as Mavis, and Canada's Toby Robins as the nefarious Dolores
Gonzales. Originally aired by the BBC in 1979; produced by John
