Novel Idea continues with a look at the novel of ideas.
Also, John Neville, one of the giants of Canadian theatre,
talks about his new production of "Krapp's Last Tape," and
his participation in a huge Shakespearean festival. That's

5. IDEAS:

Tonight on Ideas...Part One of Keeping This Young Country
Sane. That was the motto of one of Canada’s greatest
psychiatrists, C.K. Clarke. His dream was to cure the
mentally ill; he took psychiatry out of the 19th century
asylum and into the modern out-patient clinic. But he also
envisioned a society based on biological determinism, in
which psychiatrists would decide which citizens were
acceptable and which were not. A profile by Ideas producer

"Buying on Time" by Antanas Sileika. Arriving in Ontario
after World War Two, an Eastern European family begins by

of buying "on time." Their piecemeal acquisition of all the
trappings of suburbia parallels their transformation into
typical Canadians. That's Between the Covers, in Hour One of
