To give Radio 2 a little bit of credit, I'd say that the evening "Radio
2 in Performance" show is a good program for hearing concerts,
especially by Canadian orchestras. Broadcasts of concerts (live or
recorded) is one thing CBC does better than private radio.

I too can't tolerate the unctuous Jurgen Gothe ... and I can't figure
out what this "Take Five" show is supposed to be; so far the five-hour
marathon seems to have no focus.

I happen to really enjoy "Brave New Waves" and the refreshingly eclectic
"Radiosonic," though I don't know how much appeal either show has for
the average rmc reader ...

Regards,
Paul

I am not an unconditional fan of the new CBC Radio 2. I very much miss
my daily dose of Ken Winters, and all I learned from him. But I
definitely DO NOT miss Leon Cole, or his replacement Bill Richardson and
the request show. Bob Kerr was getting a little fussy in his old age.

In general I would agree that there are a lot more broadcasts of live
Canadian concerts, both throughout Take 5, and in the evenings. This
increases exposure of Canadian musicians, and the concerts are of high
caliber. The repertory is not that redundant either. Just yesterday
there was a guitar trio by a composer who wasn't even listed in the New
Grove Dictionary (and yes, I don't remember his name!). There is also
more local cultural news which I welcome, and I enjoy the breaks of
music to discuss film or literature.

Now, although I love Sheilagh Rogers, she really shines only when she is
interacting with another person. I would suggest that they have an
invited guest on for the show Take Five, each day, and it would increase
the interest during the introductions of the music.

My two bits worth.

Ron

I agree with you about Ken Winter. I miss hearing his commentaries as I,
too, learned a lot from him.

As for "RSVP", I became somewhat annoyed with it in its last days. It was
a far cry from the show it was when it was on AM and originated in
Edmonton with Dennis Woodrow as its host. My mother and I used to
exchange birthday greetings with each other by making requests.

When "As You Like It" came on, I switched over to our provincial CKUA.

Is this why the CBC Stereo service was removed from C-Band satellite?
It is no longer available to C-band listeners at all. I miss Music
Alive & the Sunday morning choral program(can't remember the name).
Are all us U.S. listeners doomed? I also miss Gilmore's Albums, which
more than once, when I traveled to Canada, had me heading into the
record store to get the CD's he was reviewing.

You wouldn't hear Clyde any more anyway - he retired.
Being in his 80's, I'd say he's put in enough time :)

Your best shot while driving up this way is after 11 PM.
There's a Classical programme on Radio 1 then, until 1.

If you can stand the AM, try 740 or 940 at night. They
come in pretty good down there.

Small world, innit?

P.S. I have been half-enjoying classical of late.
I think it's Clyde's fault.

It's repeated *early* in the morning on Radio 2, as I wake up to it on
weekdays.

But if you're interested in a *good* classical music program that also
includes CD reviews, "Sound Advice" is on Radio 2 from 1200 - 1330 hrs on
Saturdays and on Radio 1 from 1830 - 2000 hrs on Sundays. Rick Phillips
reviews and comments on a number of recent releases (which was how I was
introduced to much of the music recorded by Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli
Consort and Players). He also includes a library feature which can vary
from what to have in a basic library to great performers. He's
concentrating now on "Composer of the Month".

It's definitely worth listening to.

I think his approach to broadcasting is jazz-like. It may work with music,
not so sure about announcing ....
