Tony Burman, is the former head of Al Jazeera English and CBC News and
now teaches journalism at Ryerson University. He wrote an opinion
piece in the Toronto Star on Al Jazeera for the USA.

Using another nym I had three comments disallowed. Can anyone explain
why? Here are the comments.

"There was much worry in mid-May among Al Jazeera journalists about a
decision by senior management to delete a controversial essay about
Zionism and anti-Semitism by Columbia University Middle East scholar
Joseph Massad."

Coverage of Zionism is effectively banned from the mass media in the
western world even though it is the dinosaur in the news room. It may
be that AJE has to go along with this black-out if
it wants to get a listing with the American TV signal distributors.

As well as Al Jazeera and RT Today there are PressTV (Iran) and CCTV
(China) freely available from satellite and the internet.

There is a determined effort to silence PressTV in particular. It
frequently exhibits Palestine and other zionist issues ... an area
effectively blacked out by western mass media. Zionism is off-limits
in the West as is criticizing the Emir in Qatar.

When a cable distributor made application to the CRTC to distribute
the Al Jazeera signal, there was almost total public support. The
only opponents were branches of the Israel lobby. Faced with the
inevitable, the lobby came to an understanding with AJE that they
would not question the Holocaust or engage in "other anti-semitic
activities".

That was the price that AJE had to pay at that time. Today it has to
make more compromises if it hopes to get carried by cable and
satellite in the USA.
