-- RADIO ONE --

1. White Coat, Black Art:

This week on White Coat, Black Art… For most people, falling ill means
being a stranger in a strange land. The land is medicine, and it has
its own practices, customs and language. Patients and their families
are told what to do. And they do their best to follow along. But this
week on White Coat, Black Art, we give them the floor.
And they give the rest of us some hard-earned tips on how best to
manage the system.
Patrick Conlan's partner fell ill and ended up in hospital for 15
weeks. That’s on White Coat, Black Art, with Dr. Brian
Goldman...Saturday at 10:00 a.m. (10:30 NT) on CBC Radio One.

2. GO!:

For Boxing Day, Brent Bambury is regifting one of his favourite shows
from this season. It's the Shoebox show featuring the comedic
blizzard that is Scott Thompson. Plus we've got the warm soulful
grooves of our special musical guest, Saidah Baba Talibah.. That’s on
Saturday at 10:30 a.m. (11 NT) on CBC Radio One.

3. QUIRKS & QUARKS:

The Quirks Holiday Question Show. Yes, it’s that time of year again,
when families get together, gather round their radios, and ask
themselves, Why don’t dogs hyperventilate when they’re panting? And
how come restaurants can make ice cubes that are perfectly clear? And
why is the hole in the ozone layer over the South Pole much bigger
than the hole over the North Pole? And is it true that cat’s whiskers
only grow as long as their bodies are wide? Well, you’ve probably
guessed by now that it’s our annual brain-teasing, audience pleasing,
Google-seizing, mind-reasoning Quirks & Quarks Holiday Question Show.
We’ve selected 10 of your best science questions, and hunted down 10
Canadian scientists with the answers. That's Quirks & Quarks, with
host Bob McDonald, Saturday at 12noon (12:30 NT) on CBC Radio One.

4. A CHRISTMAS CAROL: REDUX (PRE-EMPTS THE DEBATERS & WIRETAP)

A Christmas Carol: Redux is a one-hour radio program that retells the
Charles Dickens classic with a dark comedic spin courtesy of ‘Ready,
Set, Panic’. Set in the present day, with a crumbling economy and
skyrocketing unemployment, cheapskate Scrooge refuses to share his
wealth with those less fortunate. Join our narrator, Russell Thomas,
as he recounts this classic Christmas tale with visits by The Ghosts
of Christmas Past, Present, and Future (all while he battles his own
ghosts due to a recent divorce). That’s on CBC Radio One at 1:00 p.m.

-- Radio 2 --

6. Saturday Afternoon at the Opera:

This week on Saturday Afternoon at the Opera, an Elektra-fying
performance. Consipracy, vengeance and madness are the forces that
destroy a Greek royal family in the tragic, mythological tale of
Elektra. British soprano Susan Bullock sings the demanding title role
in Richard Strauss's searing modernist setting, as Elektra vows to
avenge the death of her father, King Agamemnon. Following the Met
broadcast, Bill Richardson will interview Welsh soprano Gwyneth Jones.

2:30 NT) on CBC Radio 2.

1. The Sunday Edition

This week on The Sunday Edition…They say the poor will always be with
us.
But what exactly does it mean to be poor in twenty-first century
Canada?
It doesn't mean what it once did. People used to actually starve in
the streets, and now they don't. So can we cross ‘alleviating poverty’
off our national to-do list for 2010?
This week...a conversation about poverty, inequality, and how to tell
the difference in an advanced industrial economy. That’s on The
Sunday Edition with host Michael Enright…Sunday at 9:00 a.m. (9:30 NT)…
on CBC Radio One.

2. SPARK:

Earlier this year, a Nielsen survey said that US teens send and
receive 2,272 text messages per month. If you do the math, that's
about 80 texts each and every day. But what's it actually like to send
that many texts? This week on Spark, Nora Young sends correspondent Al
Rae on a mission: to text like a teen.
--
Get into the festive spirit with Spark…Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (1:30 NT)

3. CROSS COUNTRY CHECKUP: ** NOTE: please change time to suit your
time zone...Network shows say "Sunday afternoon..." **

Sunday on Cross Country Checkup ...classical music. Christmas is the
season for traditions and classics of all sorts ...and music is
certainly one of them. But how is classical music surviving in the
age of pop? Is it thriving? What do you think?

Join guest host Tom Allen, Sunday on Cross Country Checkup.. Sunday at
4:00 p.m. EASTERN on CBC Radio One.

4. C’est la vie:

What happens when you bring together a Christmas dinner and a TV
reality show?
Find out, on C'est la vie when we bring you a seasonal story with a
difference. It's called "Makeover," and it has all the makings of a
modern tragedy. That's with Bernard St-Laurent, Sunday night at
6:30pm (7:30 AT, 8 NT) on CBC Radio One.
