I could just get wallwarts, but it's not a neat, and I'd like to compare the
cost first.

Perhaps someone familiar with your model will have some specific
info ... but what you describe is much like Kenwood, Drake and
ICOM addressed their desktop charger design. The contacts on the
rear door pass through to mate with contacts on a special
rechargeable battery pack. The desktop charger cradle plugs into
the wall and stays on waiting for a radio to be 'dropped-in'.
Kenwood made their special battery pack using very poorly rated
NiCD cells [650 mAh I believe] - and wanted about $25 for it ---
and another $30 or so for the charger.
I was interested - until they introduced it - and at their price
- it was not a good value for me.
A better route might be to get a universal pulse charger for
individual cells - MiNH is the preferred composition. That way -
you could begin to purchase rechargeables for all of your other
devices - and get out of the disposable battery business for
good.

Maha came out recently with the MH-C500K, a dual port quick charger,
for the LF14 & LH14 radios. Charging time is between 1 and 3 hours.
Oddly though they are using NiCD cells in their (Maha) packs rated at
800 mAh.
Price is $48.99 at Bill's 2-Way which includes the charger and one
battery pack. Additional battery packs are $17.99.
Not sure that's a big improvement compared to the capacity of most
NiMH cells available.
I'm still using the Drake charger to charge my LF14 after my daughter
found it in the bottom of her purse (it's been there for a few
months). I'm using Nexcell 1350 mAh cells in it but haven't run a
battery life check yet.

Yes, I own a set of batteries and the drop-in charger, which accepts two
radios at once (but charges them in sequence, not concurrently).
The charger is $30 and the battery packs are $15.
If you want to order them you have to call Shelly, Inc, Fanon's parent
company. I don't remember their number but their website is
www.shellyinc.com. If you need part numbers for the batteries, chargers,
or other Fanon accessories, I have a GIF file price list I can post
somewhere...
