I have a general question regarding repeaters and GMRS radios (the
Motorola T7200). That radio is supposed to be "repeater capable". Has
anybody had any experience using that radio with a repeater?

Assuming I have permission and all other requirements, what is the
standard procedure when using the T7200 with a repeater? Would I just
tune it to the proper repeater channel and then "Push-To-Talk"? Or, do
I need to set the radio to use the proper "Interference Eliminator"
Code? Do repeaters generally require the use of a set "Interference
Eliminator" code?

The theory I currently have in my head is that all I would need to do
is tune to an appropriate repeater channel and "push to talk". I am
thinking that my use of the "Interference Eliminator" code would not
be needed to actually access the repeater and would be optional; only
needed if I wanted to restrict which conversations I heard on my
radio. However, I am starting to think that maybe the "Interference
Eliminator" code can be used to control access to the repeater itself.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks!

Most repeaters use CTCSS or DCS codes/tones to control access to the
repeater. These are what you are referring to as "interference eliminator"
codes. Normally (but not always), the repeater will also transmit the same
tone as you need to access it. There are situations where the transmit and
receive codes may be different. A repeater may well have multiple tones
activated, a different one for each authorized user. That way you would not
hear other users while they are using the repeater. You should always
monitor the frequency without the tone guard enabled before transmitting to
make sure that someone is not already using the frequency, but with a
different tone.

I am not familiar with the particular radio you have, so can only speak in
general terms. You would need to set the radio to operate using the
repeater split (transmit on 467.xxx frequency while receiving on 462.xxx
frequency), and also to use the proper tone for access.

The manual states once you set it to a "repeater channel" it takes over
from there. It sets the transmit and receive splits for you. All you need
to do is set the proper ctcss tone (if any) and off you go.

No, I don't think that is correct. You would also need to re-set the
bandwidth from 'narrow' (frs compatible) to 'wide'

That particular radio has the ability to transmit in either wide or narrow
depending on the setting.

And yes, the CTCSS tones are often used on that band to prevent stray
transmissions (intermod) from accidentally activating repeaters.
