This question is entirely acadamic at this stage as there are no DAB+
broadcasts in the UK.

I got a PURE One Mini series 2 for Christmas. I see there is a
suggestion that most of the PURE range can be upgraded in Australia
(where DAB+ has been introduced). I contacted PURE support and they
told me the UK units do not 'have DAB+ support'. However, it is not
at all clear to me what they mean by this.

Is it:

1. They are not hardware compatible.
2. They are not software/firmware compatible
3. A royalty issue

I am very surprised that PURE would want to make two versions of the
same product, unless the issue is royalty and they can avoid royalty
payments for a large part of their production. Does anyone know the
definitive answer?

Must be 3.
They simply load different firmware in receivers destined for markets
other than the UK, to save money. Other countries have either started
conversion to DAB+ or announced that they will do so.

If it has a USB socket, it can be upgraded but you must visit Pure's
website from a non-UK IP address like mine.

Yes, I think that it's a royalty issue. One DAB+ Australian receiver
(Sangean DPR-65) don't receive DAB to save costs. Beware!!

I wondered that. I looked at the Australian website, but only a small
number of products is listed, mine not included.
http://www.pure.com/dabplusoz/upgrade.asp

I looked at the support site.
http://support.pure.com/files.php?id=42

It says only v3.x or v5.x can be upgraded and refers you to the manual
to find out how to determine the software version. I cannot find this
information. It suggests only UK software can be upgraded. Are you
saying if you log on outside the UK the UK software will be upgraded
to non UK (DAB+)?

I don't know how to upgrade but Wohnort site says this:

I've had a reply from Pure. They say the hardware (in the One Mini)
is different in UK and non-UK versions, so the UK versions cannot be
upgraded.

That would mean they would have to do a separate factory run, for the UK
model, and would need to make sure the stock intended for the UK is kept
and distributed separately from all the rest.

Sounds a bit unlikely, perhaps this is just an excuse.

They will need to make sure the stock intended for the UK is kept and
distributed separately anyway because of the different plug design.

They should know as the manufacturer!

If it (perhaps) helps ...
... wiki mentions both a firmware upgrade and an implied hardware change.
I can understand the firmware. The reference to DAB radios that went on sale
from July 2007 could be (I think) either a change in hardware or a change in
the firmware in the radio as supplied from the factory.

I listen to Radio 4 Extra via Freeview - it's been more than forty years
since I bought my first stereo tuner and I do not indent to revert to mono
(Radio 4 Extra via DAB).

Regards, Ian.

You obviously didn't get the goverments memo - poor quality mono is the
future. Because its digital! So that makes it ok.
