I want to listen to 1Extra.
Is this possible? Or do I need to get a tuner that has DAB in the
description?
AN Other.

This may be a nice FM/AM tuner but it won't bring you 1Xtra, you need an actual
'DAB' tuner or alternatively a Freeview box, you can get a Pace DTVA for around
£90.

No, that's an analogue tuner. It wont get you digital radio but it will
sound quite good given a clean signal to work from...

As others have said RDS is FM analogue and you won't be able to
receive any DAB stations.
I think it's a disgrace when shops advertise analogue radios as
'digital' tuners without clarification first i.e. 'You cannot receive
digital radio stations with this radio'.
I think it's potentially very misleading to Joe public. The only
thing that's digital in a 'digital' tuner is the frequency display.
The sound IS simply 'pure crystal clear analogue' quality.
Mart
Of course one could say labelling decent FM tuners as 'digital' is actually
slanderous these days.

Yeh man I already got a tuner, just took a quick risk with a cheap deal
ending on ebay, £41, THINKING that RDS and DIGITAL TUNER meant I could get
1 EXTRA, Damiit!
I might replace my old tuner with it or the RDS will go in the free ads if
its worth over £80.
ANOther piece of kit to deal with in this already cramped little studio.
BTW Do you really have to pay any subscription fees to activate DAB radio?
My mate works in the satelite/aerials business and installed a great big
aerial in the corner of his bedroom for this DAB thing he got,, I was well
impressed, but he didn't mention about paying any fees to get the content,
think he got his from richer sounds £160 Cambridge audio.
Can I get a DAB Tuner cheaper?

Very much so. If I was to design a new FM tuner I might revert back to an
analogue dial to deliberately differentiate my product from the digital crap
that we've got available. :)

DAB sounds worse than FM - so put Radios 1-4 on DTT at 192kbps please

The string for the pulley wheels appears to be unavailable. ;-)
If any one knows different a URL would be appreciated.

No, it's just free to air.

I saw one of those 'Acoustic Solutions' tuners for £129 in Argos today,
apparently they're going for £99 at Richer Sounds. However, maybe it's worth
looking at a Freeview/DTT box instead, they go for around £90 plus the quality
for 1Xtra etc is better than DAB, but you will need a fairly decent aerial.
Or you get a FTA satellite box for around the same price, your friend would come
in useful for fitting the dish - http://www.sateuropa.co.uk/
Az.
Btw, 1Xtra did a big Drum 'n Bass thing last weekend.
Get a Freeview set-top box and hook that up to your hi-fi. It will sound
*far* better for 1Xtra than DAB does.
If you are not going to use a TV to change channels then get the Nokia
Free-to-View set-top box for about £80 from Dixons.
DAB sounds shit, but the BBC radio stations on Freeview sound good.
I think it was hemp twine, try <http://www.hemptraders.com/>
I've had pretty good success with rubber bands in the past.
Thanks Ian, I'll pass the info on to a friend who asked me to look out
for some.
