FAQ: Why So Much Radio News Not San Diego or Los Angeles Related?

I've been asked this question a few times, but this needs to be explained
further.

There are plenty of radio news regarding personalities and commentaries all
over the web via my "News" links section off my website
http://www.davesfunstuff.com/radio for you to read more the stories about
radio in the area.

However, there are radio stories of interest to listeners who are open to
more choices for them to look forward to such as XM Satellite Radio,
WarpedRadio, ZDTV Radio (all discussed in this issue), plus selected
notable radio news from across the country, as well as notable TV news (SNL
25th) with a Internet angle.

Time and space limits the selections, so a lot of the stories are tightened
up where needed in order to bring you a faster-paced but informative report
on the hot topics of the day.

While radio news might be slow at times, some of the other stories come in
to fill up the space to be of interest to you and me.

Past Pirate Broadcaster on 89.1

For a few issues, I've been reporting about the 96.1 hip hop station going
on and off the air this past month.

This from an e-mail in 1998 by Mike Tosch, FM Chief Engineer, KPBS-TV/Radio

"There is an actual pirate FM broadcaster on 89.1 in Balboa Park of San
Diego. Heard them earlier today on a trip downtown. They have about a 1-2
mile radius. They have been on the air for almost two years. They do not
bother reception of KPBS in the park area, but apparently do bother KSDS
88.3, or did bother them in the past, as they have filed an official
complaint with the FCC. No action to date. I could show you their transmit
antenna. It is clearly visible. They never talk, just play rap and world
type music, and in MONO."

The e-mail was in early 1998 and the FCC took care of the problem shortly
afterward.

Memories of Early San Diego TV

So, what's your fondest memories about the early television personalities
of San Diego?

Send me e-mail at davi...@cts.com or post in the newsgroup a reply.

From Jeff Schanbacher

"I caught your page while doing a little research on Johnny Downs. I note
you say he is the first celebrity you met. Me too!! I grew up in San Diego
and he was the guy I always watched for afternoon cartoons. He used to
dance on the top of those Golden Arrow milk bottles, too. Did you watch him
in San Diego? If so, you may also remember Uncle Russ and Shane on KFMB
channel 8."

I replied to him:

Johnny Downs used to host the Flintstones and other cartoons in his weekday
show airing something like the late 60's until the early 70's. He hosted
the live kids show contest about the Magic Key where he draws a name from a
barrel, calls up the youngster, asks him where the key was that would
unlock the vault holding all the toys (the magic key that unlocks it is in
one of 10 numbers which remains unchanged until a winner is selected), and
was on what was then KOGO 10. You probably already knew that he was in the
old Our Gang shorts.

I also remembered Shane in Wonderland and Uncle Russ, Cartoon Carnival,
Suzy Saturn, and with cable, I got Mickey Mudturtle, Hobo Kelly, Soupy
Sales, Sheriff John, Billy Barty, Bozo, Winchell and Mahoney, Skip and
Woofer, Pixanne, Jack and Phyllis (I guess), and many others I can't name
off my head, but this golden age of kids shows was golden compared to the
corporate syndicated cookie-cutter junk all over the airwaves nowadays.
Like, what's the deal with Beetle Borgs, Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers
anyway? What values are these shows teaching the kids today? I watched them
a few times and shut off the nimrod-produced junk shortly.

Looks like local TV has gone the way of corporate cloning instead of
serving our local children.

Jeff replied:

"I was born in San Diego in 1955 and spent many years (too many?) watching
TV there. I remember most of the shows you mentioned. Do you remember on
Saturday afternoons they had a Elvira type character called Moonalisa? She
showed horror movies. I also recall early in the morning they showed Our
Gang comedies and Laurel and Hardy shorts. A little side note, Jack White
who did (does ?) news on KGTV lent our graduating class his collection of
silent movies for part of our aftergraduation party. (I went to Helix with
Bill Walton).

"I recall on good days we could get some shows from LA on 11 and 13 but the
weather had to be just right.

"One last thing.....I worked for a while at KDEO radio (now gone) and many
years later I ran into a once popular DJ - Ed Chambers - in a small town
and we got together and talked about old times and San Diego radio and it
was pretty cool. He was back to the simple life and I was on to other
things but it was neat to hear a familiar voice on my car radio and hooking
up with him. I'm out for now."

Listen to ZDTV Radio

ZDTV Radio, ZDTV's streaming audio service (http://www.zdtv.com/radio) with
the latest news and information about computing, technology, and the
Internet, is now available in RealNetworks'(R) RealSystem(TM) G2 format, a
streaming media technology.

More than 70 million Internet surfers who have RealNetworks' streaming
audio player installed in their computers will be able to listen to ZDTV
Radio online.

"We are delighted that ZDTV has chosen RealSystem G2 as a format for
streaming media on ZDTV Radio," said Mark Hall, vice president of Media
Publishing, RealNetworks. "This gives listeners a superior quality audio
experience of ZDTV Radio's extensive news programming."

So am I as a matter of fact. Microsoft's buggy Windows Media Player is
available only on computers with Windows 95/98/NT operating systems
installed and it often hangs my computer up. By using RealNetworks'
streaming format, almost all of the current operating systems can hook up
and listen to ZDTV Radio.

ZDTV Radio is to tech as ESPN is to sports. ZDTV includes breaking news,
business, interviews, and other features.

ZDTV Radio launched in March on Windows Internet Explorer 5.0 (IE 5.0), and
will continue to be available in the Windows Media Format.

Its features can also be heard on "Into Tomorrow With Dave Graveline," a
three-hour live program carried on 672 AM and FM affiliates around the
world, but not on KOGO or KSDO as far as their websites know.

ZDTV is a 24-hour television channel producing entertaining information
about technology, computing and the Internet. Its integrated Web site,
ZDTV.com enhances the channel by providing dynamic, interactive programming
that invites audience participation through the Internet. ZDTV, an
affiliate of Ziff-Davis (NYSE: ZD), is one-third owned by Vulcan Ventures.
