problems for so long, and he is still battling on with his good-
heartedness and boundless energy. His efforts have not been in vain, but
he will probably not live to see them come to fruition, for by the time
people understand what he is saying in his paintings it will be too late.
He is one of the most advanced painters and it is difficult to understand
him, even for me who knows him so intimately. His ideas cover so much
ground, examining what is humane and how one should look at the world,
that one must first free oneself from anything remotely linked to
convention to understand what he was trying to say, but I am sure he will
be understood later on. It is just hard to say when.

{Born 30 March 1853, van Gogh failed at art dealing, teaching, and
bookselling. He became a missionary preacher, then lost his religion but
began his art with charcoal drawings. Aside from writing several hundred
letters, in just ten years van Gogh produced 870 paintings, 1037
drawings, 150 watercolours, 133 letter sketches, 9 lithographs, and 1
etching. Of just the paintings, 752 of them were done from December 1883
to May 1890; that's one every three days for 6 1/2 years. His last 77
paintings were done in the two months before his suicide at age 37.}
Looking at the stars always makes me dream, as simply as I dream over the
black dots representing towns and villages on a map. Why, I ask myself,
shouldn't the shining dots of the sky be as accessible as the black dots
on the map of France?
