Historian, constitutional scholar; born Pittsburgh, 1902.

Free society must fertilize the soil in which non-conformity and dissent and
individualism must grow.
---Henry Steele Commager, address, 1954

Who would be cleared by their (Un-American Acitvities) Committees?
Not Washington, who was a rebel. Not Jefferson, who wrote that all men are
created equal and whose motto was "rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God."
Not Garrison, who publicly burned the Constitution. Not Lincoln, who
admonished us to have mailce toward none, charity to all.
---Henry Steele Commager, _Harper's_, September, 1947

Loyality...is a realization that America was born of revolt, flourished in
dissent, became great through experimentation.
---Henry Steele Commager, _Freedom, Loyality, Dissent_, 1959

The truth is that the left-wing poster children exposed by
[Elia] Kazan were members of an organization-the Communist Party-that
was directed and financed by the Soviet government. This was a closed
and secret organization, dedicated to the violent overthrow of the
U.S. Constitution, and its replacement by a Marxist dictatorship. They
sought to impose a regime which would have destroyed economic and
political freedom for all Americans (including freedom of speech).
They supported Nazi Germany from 1939 to 1941, and refused to condemn
the invasion of Poland (due to the alliance between Hitler and
Stalin). They successfully inserted Communist propaganda into numerous
Hollywood films, such as allegedly innocuous and patriotic films like
"The Best Years of Our Lives.

Still today many subscribe to the infamous assertion of E. M.
Forster that, if he had to choose between betraying his country and
betraying his friends, he hoped he would have the guts to betray his
country. Forgotten is the reality that one is betraying one's friends
by betraying one's country. Forgotten, too, is the fact that those who
are the friends of tyrants and mass murderers should not be counted as
friends.
--Richard John Neuhaus, of Elia Kazan's Academy Award & attendant
flap.
