At the governors' meeting [in 1969, during the Kentucky Derby, Nunn hosted
the Republican Governors' meeting, attended by, i.a., President Nixon] in
Lexington, a group seeking more representation for poor people on regional
boards presented Nunn with a mule, to lampoon a thoroughbred group's gift of
a racehorse to the governors.
After failing to limit remarks by the group's spokeswoman, Nunn replied,
"When I look in the face of this forlorn animal, I think of the sadness on
the faces and in the hearts of the poor. . . . Then, as he walks away and
I look at his rear quarters, I shall always be mindful of the conduct and
behavior of some of those who made the presentation."
LOL!
Very nice!
Remarkably blunt for a politician!
A political career brings out the basest qualities in human nature.
