I am trying to find the source for what I believe to be the quote
"There's no there there" (possibly referring to Los Angeles?).
E-mail reply appreciated since I do not have easy access to this
newsgroup.

I think this one is attributable to Gertrude Stein, and that
the reference is in fact to the city of Oakland, not Los Angeles.

Hope this helps.

Either Gertrude Stein or Alice B. Toklas; referring, I think, to
Oakland, not Los Angeles. And to the impossibility of going back.

It was Oakland. And a few years ago someone put up a big sculpture in
some public space in Oakland. Its title is "There."

What was the use of my having come from Oakland [California] it
was not natural to have come from there yes write
about it if I like or anything if I like but not there, there
is no there there.

In the United States there is more space where nobody is
than where anybody is. This is what makes America
what it is.
-Gertrude Stein, _The Geographical History of America
or the Relation of Human Nature to the
Human Mind_

This space is usually reserved for a brief description of a book's
contents.
In this case, however, I must frankly admit that I do not know what Miss
Stein
is talking about. I do not even understand the title.
I admire Miss Stein tremendously, and I like to publish her books
although most of the time I do not know what she is driving at.
That, Miss Stein tells me, is because I am dumb.
I note that one of my partners and I are characters in this latest
work
of Miss Stein's. Both of us wish we knew what she was saying about us.
Both of us hope too that her faithful followers will make more of this
book
than we were able to.

And much, much later the famed and longtime newspaper
columnist Herb Caen wrote that the trouble with Oakland
is that when you get there it's there.
