I have tried my best to give the nation everything I
had in me. There are probably a million people who
could have done the job better than I did it, but I
had the job and I had to do it, and I always quote
an epitaph on a tombstone in Tombstone, Arizona:
"Here lies Jack Williams. He done his damndest."
--Harry S. Truman (1884-1972)

On May 8, 1884, Harry Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri. The son of a
mule trader and farmer, he had an undistinguished early career before
serving with valor in WWI. Returning home, he entered politics and
served in a number of state offices before being elected in 1935 to the
U.S. Senate, where he developed a reputation for personal integrity. In
1944, President Roosevelt named Truman as his VP running mate (replacing
current VP, Henry Wallace). FDR died in April of 1945, eighty-two days
into Truman's vice presidency and a month away from his 61st birthday.
As the 33rd president, he presided over the U. S. at the end of WWII and
during the beginning of the Cold War. Not highly regarded during his
two terms, Truman's star has steadily risen in the eyes of historians
ever since. An avid reader, he once said:

"Not all readers become leaders.
But all leaders must be readers."

Truman was prone to using salty language and once referred to a
Republican politician's speech as "a bunch of horse manure." When an
aide suggested to First Lady Bess Truman that she might want to tell her
husband to "tone down" his language, she replied:

"You don't know how many years it's taken me
to get him to say horse manure!"
