Very True, The Linnets Sing
Very true, the linnets sing
Sweetest in the leaves of spring:
You have found in all these leaves
That which changes and deceives,
And, to pine by sun or star,
Left them, false ones as they are.
But there be who walk beside
Autumn's, till they all have died,
And who lend a patient ear
To low notes from branches sere.

Parting Gift
I cannot give you the Metropolitan Tower;
I cannot give you heaven;
Nor the nine Visigoth crowns in the Cluny Museum;
Nor happiness, even.
But I can give you a very small purse
Made out of field-mouse skin,
With a painted picture of the universe
And seven blue tears therein.
I cannot give you the island of Capri;
I cannot give you beauty;
Nor bake you marvelous crusty cherry pies
With love and duty.
But I can give you a very little locket
Made out of wildcat hide:
Put it in your left-hand pocket
And never look inside.

May 26th
The primary component of this week's update is Bob's continued march
through the H's. Nelson Miller has followed up last week's poems by
Elinor Wylie with a likely portrait of her in verse, written by her
husband at the time, William Rose Benet. I've just acquired books by
Sam Walter Foss and Ella Wheeler, so look for more of them in the near
future. The Bibliography has also been updated.
I will be at a medical trade show in New York the first week in June
(which is always a heavy travel month), so look for updates to be
erratic for a while. --Steve
