Hi:
How old would you be if you didn't know how old you was? Satchel Paige
When you grow old or ill, the most important things to you will be who
and what you loved. june Martin
In all my years of counseling people near death, I've yet to hear anyone
say they wish they had spent more time at the office. Rabbi Kuschner

Possibly not old age, but something I gleaned from a book by Gene Hill, who
wrote for one of the popular sports magazines...
TIME
We have all looked ahead to owning time that could be spent in lieu of
other commodities.
Time to fine-hone a pointing dog.
Time to checker a stock,
Time to work a knife from a file.
Time to learn to tie flies.
Time to craft a rod or make a boat.
And time to learn to use them well.
Time to see where the river sprang from a spring,
Time to see past the horizon,
Time to listen to the birds and smell the pines.
Time to see where the bear went over the mountain and see what he could see.
Remember when time was cheap? The songs we sang about it told us that
we had time on our hands, that time stood still, that tomorrow would be time
enough.
And now we find it was not so.
Suddenly, times to come have become times past, and we must hoard it
and spend it as cautiously as the tag ends of a small inheritance...
which is what it really was all along - except no one told us.
So we find now that the skills we dreamed of are scant and awkward.
The time came to choose between spending money or time,
and most of us chose money - because as little as we had of it,
we had more of it than time.
A dog or so was worked just enough to be called "passable" by close friends,
but the knives I use are not shaped by my hand, I bum flies and borrow
the rods I dreamed of making. The mountain that I waited so long to
cross is woven with tar roads, and the bear is a remnant from stories
of others and trips to the zoo with children.
But regret cannot be bundled up like a foundling and left late at night on
another's doorstep, to be someone else's responsibility.
And although I did few of the things I once dreamed of - I've done a
good many things that please me much.
The money I've earned I've spent like a sailor on leave,
and the time I promised to put in on useful endeavors
I've spent skylarking with similar-minded friends;
exchanging daydream for daydream about what magnificent things
we would have if we were rich -
and the wonderful things we would accomplish if only we ever had the time.

Here's a personal favorite from my collection:
When I can look at life with eyes,
grown calm and very coldly wise,
Life will have given me the truth,
and taken in exchange my youth.
--Author Unknown
I'm putting together an article on aging and would love to know if anyone
had any clues as to who the author being quoted might be. Thanks in
advance. E-mail me privately if you like.
