I wish I knew, it has been a favorite of mine for years. I have a
slightly longer version:
PERSIST ... PERSIST

accredited to Anonymous.
Caron Wheeler (UK singer, not well-known in North America,
unfortunately) sang those lyrics with some modification and additions, to
music written by Jimmy Hanes. Unfortunately, the liner notes don't
point out that CW, JH, or whoever, are not responsible for writing the
lyrics. Maybe this poem is so well known, they didn't feel that they
had to. If you like this poem, I suggest you check out Caron
Wheeler's UK BLAK (1990 EMI-USA). It's a beautiful song adaption, IMHO.
The rest of the album also has some good funk, a sprinkling of reggae,
a nice a capella piece, and 'aware' lyrics.
