On May 26, 1987, Dr. Arthur M. Sackler died in New York City at age 73.
After getting his medical degree from New York University in the late
1930s, Sackler specialized in psychiatry, doing pioneering work in the
field before turning to the world of medical advertising and medical
publishing, where he made his fortune. He began serious art collecting
in the early 1940s and within a few decades became one of the world's
most important and influential art collectors. Much of his collection
is now housed in the Sackler wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as
well as in galleries he helped establish at the Smithsonian, Harvard,
Princeton, Columbia and other colleges around the world. Explaining why
a research scientist would be so interested in art, he once wrote:
"Art and science are two sides of the same coin. Science is a discipline
pursued with passion; art is a passion pursued with discipline. At
pursuing both, I've had a lot of fun."
